Student Veteran Services (SVS)

As veteran students, you have opportunities available to you every semester to make the transition easier. Whether you are looking to receive advisement before your priority registration date, become re/certified, or file a tuition deferral, our advisors in Student Veteran Services do these and more.

Advisors are available to assist you and guide you throughout the college process. They understand that balancing college life with military, career, family, and personal responsibilities can be extremely challenging. That’s why Student Veteran Services is proud to provide support and information to meet your needs and get you to the graduation finish line. Our staff comes from a variety of backgrounds and experiences and will work with you in order to accomplish your goals.

Alex Rosero

As Assistant Director for Academic Advising I lead the Student Veteran Services (SVS) team at Hunter College. I provide academic advising support and serve as the lead certifying official with the Veterans Administration (VA). Additionally, I work closely with all undergraduate students who intend or are currently majoring in Art History, Dance and Studio Art.

My academic advising practice teaches student veterans about transitioning to Hunter and how to make academic progress while maximizing their education benefits each semester. Moreover, I serve as a point of contact for referrals to the college’s veteran-centric, institutional and personal support programs. Whether it’s a one-on-one meeting, a remote SKYPE advising session, or a combination of the two, I work with my veteran advisees, throughout their time at Hunter, with the goal of getting to the graduation finish line.

Brian Martineau

My name is Brian Martineau, and with Brian being a popular name in our office everyone calls me “Marty.” I moved to New York City in June 2015 from Boston (I do like Boston sports), to join the team in the Office of Advising as an Academic Advisor. I graduated in 2010 from Suffolk University with a degree in Communications. I then attended Northeastern University to continue my education at the graduate level and graduated in 2012 with a Master’s degree in Student Development and Counseling. My role as an Academic Advisor is to educate students on the Hunter curriculum and help develop a successful academic plan. As part of the Student Veteran Services (SVS) team, I served as a Certifying Official for Educational Benefits through Veteran Affairs (VA). My role is to keep students veterans informed of opportunities opened to them, such as job opportunities, internships, weekly event and important dates regarding your academics. My goal for student veterans is help transition from military to civilian life in the atmosphere of a college setting. I encourage you to utilize me as a resource and ask questions regarding benefits or your educational plan.

Leora Shudofsky

I am Leora Shudofsky and am the Project Co-Director for PROVE (Project for Return and Opportunity in Veterans Education) at Silberman School of Social Work. PROVE serves student veterans on 7 CUNY campuses, including Hunter College. I joined PROVE in 2008 and have been working with the Hunter College Student Veterans since that time. I also serve as the Faculty Advisor for the Hunter College Student Veteran’s Club. I received my master’s degree in Social Work from Hunter College School of Social Work (now Silberman) in 1990. I have been teaching since 1999 and am an adjunct professor at Columbia University and Silberman Schools of Social Work. I have developed the curriculum for and am now teaching the “Social Work with Veterans and Service members” course at Silberman SSW. Working with veterans has become a true passion for me and I plan to be able to continue working with PROVE and also training up the new generation of social workers to learn more about Social Work and the Military.
