Hunter College dance majors and faculty spent a busy week of classes, rehearsals, lecture/demonstrations, and performances on the beautiful island of Tobago in June, 2007. The tour was co-sponsored by the Tobagonian government and Hunter College, as part of an effort to initiate a long-term relationship of cultural and artistic exchange. Highlights of the tour were:

  • classes in the wonderful variety of local dances taught by Tobagonian master teachers
  • interaction with Tobagonian dancers in classes taught by Hunter faculty
  • two lecture demonstration/performances for local primary and secondary school students
  • a formal gala performance of 10 company repertory dances, including student and guest artist works in a wide variety of styles
  • participation in the kick-off parade and performance for the island’s major “Heritage Festival”
  • Attendance at local theater and dance events
  • Touring to the delightful natural wonders of the island: coral reefs, mountains, idyllic beaches.

This residency was warmly received by our Tobagonian hosts and fellow dancers, and constituted a life-changing experience for the Hunter College dance students. It inaugurated what we plan to be an ongoing exchange of artistic activities.
