Lisa Tolhurst, Adjunct Lecturer, earned her M.A. in Writing and Rhetoric from New York University (1996) and in 1977 received a teaching scholarship from NYU’s Department of Expository Writing. She has published essays on 20th century women authors, including Kathy Acker, Rita Dove, Doris Lessing, Michelle Cliff, Tess Gallagher, Germaine Greer, Jamiaca Kincaid, Gloria Naylor, Anne Sexton, Jane Smiley, and Fay Weldon, as well as creative non-fiction and a comprehensive article on feminism and women’s writing in the United States from the 17th century to present times, which appeared in The Encyclopedia of American Literature. Her research interests include the exploration of the writing process as both a conscious and unconscious site of learning. To better understand the motivations and resistances of writers, she attends classes at the Center for Modern Pscyhoanalytic Studies. Tolhurst is Supervisor of the Hunter College Reading/Writing Center and a faculty consultant for Writing across the Curriculum.
