Lon S. Kaufman is Hunter's provost and vice president for academic affairs. A distinguished biologist with a deep commitment to urban public education, he spent almost 30 years at the University of Illinois, Chicago, holding posts that included provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, vice provost for undergraduate affairs, vice provost for programs and planning, dean of the Honors College, and head of the Department of Biological Sciences. His many achievements at UIC include the introduction of a popular general-education program; improvements in enrollment, retention and graduation rates; the implementation of programs supporting faculty development and streamlining tracks to tenure and promotion; and the development and launch of UIC College Prep, an open-enrollment public high school that has set records for college readiness, college admission and college success.
His breadth of experience as a senior administrator overseeing the arts and sciences, coupled with his comprehensive knowledge of professional education, prepared him well for his wide-ranging responsibilities at Hunter.
He grew up in New York, and graduated from Stuyvesant High School and Queens College before earning his PhD in cell and developmental biology at Stony Brook University.
