"The Hollywood Comedy: Laughter & Subversion" comprises a screening of scenes from the films of Charles Shyer, followed by an interdisciplinary discussion with Shyer, Jen Gaboury, Associate Director of the Women and Gender Studies Program and Professor Andrew Lund of the Department of Film & Media.
Critics have called Shyer’s comedies “completely irresistible” (USA Today). Shyer wrote the Academy Award-nominated screenplay of Private Benjamin , as well as the box office hits Father of the Bride (1 and 2), Baby Boom, Irreconcilable Differences, Alfie and The Parent Trap. Shyer’s work crosses the spectrum of sophisticated comedy—and continually subverts genre expectations and conventions. His films have won nine Golden Globe Awards and have been nominated for multiple Academy Awards.
This screening and discussion exemplify one of the fundamental goals of Arts Across the Curriculum: to bring distinguished working artists into conversation with Hunter students and faculty whose academic, creative and professional interests intersect in unexpected and thought-provoking ways.
