Biography:

Dr. Bleiweiss obtained a doctorate in clinical psychology from Stony Brook University, working under the mentorship of Dr. Edward Carr, one of the co-founders of Positive Behavior Support (PBS). The focus of her research and clinical training primarily involved assessment and intervention of autism spectrum disorder.  She has extensive clinical experience in the field providing services to children, families, and professionals in a variety of community and educational settings, serving as a behavior consultant for several agencies and programs throughout the New York metropolitan area.

Description of research:

Dr. Bleiweiss' primary research interests include the assessment and intervention of problem behavior displayed by individuals with autism. Collaborating on a number of projects with prominent researchers in the field of Positive Behavior Support, the majority of her research involves examining the relationships between biological contextual factors (e.g., medication side effects, medical conditions, etc.) and problem behavior. Additionally, she is interested in exploring the efficacy of utilizing a Positive Behavior Support approach to the assessment and intervention in educational settings.

Dr. Bleiweiss' current clinical experiences primarily involve working as a behavior specialist for the New York City Department of Education’s ASD Nest Program. She provides consultation and training to parents and professionals affiliated with this inclusion-based program.  In addition, she conducts parent trainings and workshops, as well as in-service trainings for professionals on topics related to autism spectrum disorder, challenging behavior, and Positive Behavior Support. Future goals involve developing a training manual designed to help educators working with students diagnosed with ASD, as well as developing a website for the ASD Nest Program which would provide professionals and parents with a variety of interactive resources, including a video clip library and podcast series related to intervention strategies.
