Methods and Techniques of Teaching English (ELT01)

Class Description
This course introduces a variety of approaches and proven teaching strategies that encourage effective and meaningful communication. Participants develop a range of practical skills, including conducting basic needs analyses; designing curriculum; planning lessons and assessments; using technology, and encouraging student participation.

English Grammar Review (ELT02)

Class Description
This course offers a foundational review of the structure of the English language. It gives concrete answers to the “why” questions related to language usage, emphasizing the most challenging grammar trouble-spots. Participants complete grammar exercises and learn how to analyze and explain grammar.

Tips and Tools for Teaching Grammar (ELT03)

Class Description
This course stresses the importance of introducing language in context with a focus on conveying meaning. This course exposes teacher trainees to a wide range of grammar teaching techniques and ways to incorporate them into real-life communication. Eclectic strategies for grammar teaching are emphasized.

Curriculum and Materials: Tips and Techniques (ELT04)

Class Description
Do you know how to pick, adapt, create and present the right books and curriculum materials for your ESL class or tutoring student no matter what the level? If the answer is no, then ESL Curriculum & Materials Tips and Techniques is the perfect course for you. In this class, you will learn the tips and techniques needed to create your own needs analysis to target your students (no matter what language they speak or culture they come from) and present your lessons with confidence.

Techniques for Teaching Oral and Listening Skills (ELT05)

Class Description
This course joins the theory and practice of teaching pronunciation, conversation and aural skills and examines strategies and techniques used to teach fluency and accuracy in oral communication. This course emphasizes the unique qualities of oral language and how we use language differently in oral vs. written language, along with issues in teaching listening comprehension skills and strategies.

Techniques for Teaching Reading and Writing (ELT06)

Class Description
Building upon a review of the basic processes of reading and writing, this course provides effective teaching techniques for the many sub-skills involved in reading and writing. The use of technology for literacy development is also addressed.

Practicum and Practicum Workshop (ELT08)

Not offered this semester

Class Description
In this course, trainees will have the opportunity to synthesize everything they’ve learned and get hands-on teaching experience. Each teacher trainee will be responsible for leading a portion of a class with real ESL students. The Practicum teacher will take an active role in helping the teacher trainees develop professional lessons and provide feedback to help them to build confidence and improve their teaching.
