Teaching English in Global Contexts:· EDESL 703· (3 Credits)

Faculty-led, this program offers current students the opportunity to immerse themselves in critical inquiry about English language teaching in settings outside the US. Students will delve into descriptions of the opportunities and challenges in language teaching worldwide by directly experiencing teaching English as a foreign language and serving as a volunteer teacher in Costa Rican English language teaching programs. Students will also have the opportunity to visit K-12 Costa Rican public schools. Students will simultaneously engage in Spanish language learning at their proficiency level at the Universidad Latina. This 30-hour Spanish language course is part of the TESOL experience in Costa Rica will NOT be credit-bearing.

TUITION/CREDITS: Students will receive 3 credits for EDESL 703 course in line with college guidelines.

Students will need to register via CUNY First and pay for the EDESL 703 course through the Hunter College Bursar's office.


Tuition (in state) $1,410

Program Fee $2,756

Program fee includes: homestay 22 days, airport pick up and drop off, 2 shuttles per way, entrance fee to museums and cultural activities (dance, movies, museums, etc), service learning activities at schools. Assistance with volunteering activities and use of ILISA facilities for group sessions and guest lectures; 3 days/2 nights at Tamarindo Pacific coast including transportation, guide, stay at double/triple rooms, 3 breakfasts and trip to Tortuga Island; One day tour Orosi Valley; Spanish Classes package, 40 hrs, 3 instructors.

Not included in Program Fee: airfare to and from destination ($800 estimated) and local transportation, additional meals and books ($200 estimated)


Application deposit of $350 to hold your spot due: March 15th

Remaining balance of $2471 will be due April 15th

Payments must be made with certified check or money order to Hunter College, Office of Education Abroad. NO CASH, PERSONAL CHECKS OR CREDIT CARDS. See here for office hours and contact information.

Students are responsible for meeting the payment deadline regardless of funding source, i.e. scholarships, loans, or any other type of financial aid. Late fees will be applied to payments made after stated deadlines.
