Translation Internship Application Deadlines

  • SUMMER Translation Internship: APRIL 1

Hunter College partners with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to offer Hunter students two unique opportunities to earn Hunter credits in the Canary Islands. The semester exchange option allows Hunter students from all disciplines to attend the ULPGC for a full fall or spring semester, while the Translation Internship track gives students in the Translation and Interpretation program the chance to fulfill their internship requirement with a hands-on experience abroad.

Why study in the Canary Islands? From the ULPGC fact sheet: "The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) is an institution that believes strongly in and promotes scientific progress, human exchanges and on-going collaboration in its endeavor to offer all its members an integral education. The ULPGC offers a wide range of degrees in all the major fields of knowledge. It also offers a wide range of cultural and sports activities to complement academic learning, promoting values such as solidarity, social justice, gender equality, and respect for diversity and the environment among members of the community. The ULPGC is located in the Autonomous Region of the Canary Islands (Spain), an undisputed tourist center, attracting visitors because of its mild climate and the stunning varieties of its landscape, not to mention its wealth of cultural and artistic heritage."

Situated at the crossroads of Africa, Europe, and the Americas, the Canary Islands are a unique location for students to explore a range of academic interests. Hunter students may apply for one of two tracks:

  • Track 1: Semester Exchange (available for Fall and Spring semesters)
  • Track 2: Translation Internship (available in January and Summer)

All students participating in the exchange program are required to enroll in the CUNY comprehensive travel insurance policy through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI). Visit this link to learn more about the policy and view monthly rates. Accepted students will receive the appropriate code to self-enroll.

Track 1: Semester Exchange

Students may choose to take all courses in Spanish or a mix of Spanish and English courses during their semester at the ULPGC. All students are required to take at least one course taught in Spanish. The ULPGC offers Spanish as a Second Language courses each semester for students at beginning and intermediate levels. Participants must enroll in a full time semester. Prior to applying, applicants must meet with Professor Maria Hernandez-Ojeda to discuss their eligibility for the program; applicants interested in taking courses in Translation and/or Interpretation must also meet with Professor Maria Cornelio.

Track 2: Translation Internship

Applicants for this track must be in the Translation and Interpretation program through the Romance Languages department. Students will receive credit for SPAN 391 (Internship in Translation) OR SPAN 392 (Internship in Interpretation). Applicants must have completed the prerequisites for these courses. Additionally, all prospective applicants are required to meet with Professor Maria Cornelio (Department of Romance Languages) to receive approval and discuss their interests prior to applying. As with all exchange opportunities, acceptance is not automatic; this is a competitive internship and only students who demonstrate acceptable progress in the Translation and Interpretation major will be accepted.

Both tracks are part of Hunter's reciprocal tuition exchange agreement with the ULPGC. Hunter students will continue to pay Hunter tuition for the credits they receive as part of this program.
