Additionally, one Hunter applicant, who has paid his/her deposit and been accepted to the program, will be selected for a partial scholarship to the program ($1,500), thanks to the generosity of the Qasid Institute. The scholarship will be awarded in the form of a program fee discount. The scholarship winner will be chosen based on financial need (with academic record acting as a tie breaker). No separate scholarship application is necessary but EFC (within your FAFSA report) should be provided, in order to establish financial need. After submitting your program application, applicants should email edabroad@hunter.cuny.edu (subject line: Jordan Winter 2022-2023 Scholarship EFC) with your FAFSA/EFC included as an attachment.

II) Program Description

Study in Jordan this January with Hunter College's Arabic Language program in Amman. Amman is a vibrant, diverse, and safe Arab capital. Our program is held at the Qasid Institute, a highly regarded Arabic language institute used by US government programs such as Fulbright and the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS). Students will live in gender-segregated apartments near the institute. Beginning students will study the equivalent of Hunter's Arabic 101 and be eligible to enroll in Hunter's Arabic 102 course in the Spring 2023 semester. Non-beginners will be placed in the appropriate class.

Language Courses

  • Beginning Arabic 1 - 3 CREDITS
  • Beginning Arabic 2 - 3 CREDITS
  • Intermediate Arabic 1 - 3 CREDITS
  • Intermediate Arabic 2 - 3 CREDITS
  • Advanced Arabic 1 - 3 CREDITS
  • Advanced Arabic 2 - 3 CREDITS
  •

    Visits and Excursions

In addition to classroom study, students will make 3 trips during their stay: a two-night trip to Wadi Rum and Petra and day trips to Ajloun Castle and the Dead Sea. Students will be in class 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. Each small class will have two instructors assigned to it. Students will also have access to Qasid Institute's general events such as singing and poetry night and guest lectures.

Note: Do not travel to the border with Syria and Iraq due to terrorism and armed conflict.

All applicants must fulfill the general eligibility requirements.

    III) Credits & Grades

Credits & Grades: Students will only receive credits if their converted grade is "C" or above. Letter grades for this program will appear on the transcript, but will not count towards the Hunter GPA. If grades convert to below C (C- to F), they will appear on the transcript as F.

Please note that regardless of what class you are placed in at Qasid, you will be eligible to receive credit for the next Hunter course in the sequence. For example: if you complete ARB 201 at Hunter before going to Jordan, no matter what class you are placed in there, you can receive credit for ARB 202 at Hunter (as long as you successfully complete the course in Jordan with a grade of C or better). Please note, however, that if you receive credits for 102, 202 or 302 for classes taken in Jordan, the next courses in the Arabic sequence won't be offered at Hunter until the following fall semester. The only way to continue with Arabic at Hunter in the spring semester right after our January in Jordan program, would be to receive elective credit for the course you take in Jordan then take 102, 202 or 302 at Hunter.

    IV) Estimated Costs of Attendance
