The programs below are administered and managed by Hunter. Some programs are faculty-led, while others are programs that we have previously partnered with. Faculty-led programs for Summer 2023 are still being confirmed. Please revisit this page in February 2023 for updated information.

ICDS Summer Programs


Hunter College joins forces with the International Center for Development Studies (ICDS) to offer two exciting summer opportunities! Details below.

  • Spanish and Health in Latin America: This program offers the opportunity to explore health care in a developing country while improving Spanish speaking skills. Clinical rotations for advanced Spanish speakers or community service in social welfare services for lower to intermediate level Spanish speakers are experiential learning components of the program.
    Dates: June 29 - July 29/30, 2023
  • Spanish and Sustainability Practices in Latin America: This is a service-learning program with strong Spanish language and cultural immersion components divided in urban and rural experiences. The program starts in San José, the country’s capital city and then participants immerse themselves in the culture of rural Costa Rica by living on site at a local Finca.
    Dates: May 25 - June 26/27, 2023

Hunter College of Education TESOL Programs

Teaching English in Global Contexts

EDESL 703 (3 Credits)

This faculty-led program offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in critical inquiry about English language teaching in settings outside the U.S. Students will delve into descriptions of the opportunities and challenges in language teaching worldwide by directly experiencing teaching English as a foreign language and serving as a volunteer teacher in Costa Rican English language teaching programs. Students will also have the opportunity to visit K-12 Costa Rican public schools and adult teaching contexts.

Students will simultaneously engage in Spanish language learning at their proficiency level at the ILISA Language School. Spanish classes will be provided to all participants, and are small group and at your level of proficiency from beginner-native speaker. Students can opt into 3 credits in Spanish language. The for-credit option would include classes continued on via remote instruction.

Bahamas — Dolphin Behavior & Communication

This field course provides students with a unique opportunity to gain research experience in the field by participating in a study of the vocalizations and behavior of wild dolphins. The course has two components: 1) a one-day lecture-workshop held at Hunter College in May prior to the field course, and 2) participation in a 12 day field program in June at the Bahamas field site.

  • Dolphin Behavior & Communication

England — Contemporary British Theatre

This program will explore the diversity of theatrical offerings in London and vicinity, providing a wide-ranging rich understanding of British theater practiced today, both traditional and modern.

England — Queen Mary University of London Summer School


Thanks to our ongoing partnership with Queen Mary University of London, Hunter students interested in short-term study in London can participate in the Queen Mary Summer School. This program is open to Hunter College students ONLY. This is an affiliated program.

France — Americans in Paris


To go to Paris in a American frame of mind means following Mark Twain down the Champs Elysees, stopping by Procope (the world’s oldest café) with Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, exploring Montparnasse with Henry Miller and Anaïs Nin, finding Josephine Baker in the Panthéon, and so much more. In this course, students will focus primarily on four groups of American writers, The Lost Generation, the Beats, and Black writers in the 1920’s and post-World War II, all of whom found a home in Paris that provided a haven as well as inspiration for their art.

France — French Language & Culture

In collaboration with the Hunter College Department of Romance Languages, we recommend two program options for students interested in studying French language and culture: USAC's programs in Lyon and Pau. This is an affiliated program. 

Greece — The Contemporary Lyric and Poetry Workshop


Spend a summer on the Greek island of Syros, studying and writing poetry! This three-week program will explore how the Aegean landscape was vital to the origin of lyric poetry, as seen through the work of ancient Greek poets Sappho and Homer. The course will provide a wide-ranging and historically rich understanding of the literary, cultural, and historical context of the Greek lyric, as well as its influence of contemporary American and British lyric poetry. In the Poetry Workshop course, students will produce their own creative writing, inspired by the history of the lyric, as well as the island’s beautiful setting.

Italy — Sicily: Central Mediterranean Archeology

The Central Mediterranean Archaeology Program takes places in three locations in Sicily: Stromboli and Lipari, a volcanic island in the Aeolian Archipelago, and Cannatello, on the southern coast of Sicily.

Spain — Audiovisual Translation

Canary Islands


Considered a bridge between Africa, America and Europe, the Canary Islands is an autonomous region of Spain. This program focuses on subtitling, including insights into the situation of the current audiovisual market, work methodology for translators and technologies applied to the audiovisual area.

Spain — Spanish Language & Literature

Madrid


Experience one of the liveliest cities in the world — Madrid! The program encompasses college-level undergraduate programs for six credits each in June or July, or one Intensive Program for twelve credits — June and July combined.

Germany — German Language & Culture


In collaboration with the Hunter College German Department, we recommend two program options for students interested in studying German language and culture: SUNY Cortland's program in Fulda or CUNY Queens College's program in Berlin.

Japan — Theatre, Language & Culture

This program offers students the opportunity to study Japanese language and culture while also learning about Japan's unique traditional theatre forms. The program begins with a brief stay in Tokyo and then moves to Sado Island, a beautiful, remote island off the west coast of Japan that is home to many wonderful performance traditions.

Japan - Meijo University

Meiji University

Thanks to our ongoing partnership with Meijo University, Hunter students interested in short-term study in Nagoya can participate in the Meijo Summer Study Tour. This program is open to Hunter College students ONLY. This program is a NON-CREDIT program.

  • Dates: June 27 - July 13, 2023
  • Interested students should contact the Education Abroad office to receive program details, as well as discuss application procedures as this is a NON-CREDIT program.

Madagascar — Biodiversity, Culture & Conservation


This program offers students the unique opportunity to explore Madagascar's rich biological and cultural diversity, and learn about the major conservation challenges to preserving both people and place.

Netherlands

University of Amsterdam

Thanks to our ongoing partnership with the University of Amsterdam, Hunter students interested in short-term study in Amsterdam can participate in the UvA Summer School. This program is open to Hunter College students ONLY. This is an affiliated program.

Still searching for the perfect summer opportunity? Hunter College students can also study abroad through CUNY, Affiliated programs (SUNY, CIEE, CIS Abroad, IES Abroad, and USAC), or may submit an External program for approval.

 


Tuition

Note that all tuition costs on program descriptions are listed above at the in state rate for matriculated CUNY students. If you pay out of state tuition and/or you plan to apply to one of our programs as a non-degree (non-CUNY) student, your tuition rate will be higher.

Additionally, program fees are calculated based on the tuition rate at Hunter College. If you attend a CUNY community college, you may be required to pay the tuition differential.
