Promoting Civil Discourse & Intellectual Dialogue Series

Understanding the Rise of the Antidemocratic Right

Political scientist Joe Lowndes will be in conversation with philosopher Linda Martin Alcoff about right-wing politics, the shift to authoritarianism in the US, and the limits of civil dialogue in this moment.

Panelists:

Joseph Lowndes: Joe Lowndes is a scholar of American politics whose work focuses on right-wing politics, populism, and race. He is the author of From the New Deal to the New Right: Race and the Southern Origins of Modern Conservatism and co-author, with Daniel Martinez HoSang, of Producers, Parasites, Patriots: Race and the New Right-Wing Politics of Precarity. His writing appears in both scholarly and public venues, and his work has been featured in major outlets including The New York Times, The New Yorker, and NPR. He is Professor of Political Science at Hunter College-CUNY, Director of the Public Policy Program at Roosevelt House, and the author of two forthcoming books with NYU and University of California Press.

Linda Martin Alcoff: Linda Martin Alcoff is a philosopher whose work examines the intersections of knowledge, identity, and power. They are the author of Visible Identities: Race, Gender, and the Self (winner of the Frantz Fanon Award), The Future of Whiteness, and Rape and Resistance, which explores how survivors’ knowledge and resistance are shaped by power. Their latest book, Race and Racism: A Decolonial Approach, has just been published with Oxford University Press. Linda has been a Professor of Philosophy at Hunter College since 2009.
