Grant Writing Assistance Program


As part of a grant from NSF to Hunter College and CUNY, the Gender Equity Project GEP) developed a program to provide 6 full-time junior women each semester with the resources and information they needed to write successful grant proposals. Successful applicants to the program received a course release during the semester they were writing the proposal, individualized grant writing assistance from the GEP, and "pre-reviews" from experts in the scientific area of the participant's grant proposal. Participants wrote and submitted a proposal to a federal funding agency and gave one or two seminars at their home college about how to apply for grants.

Participants of the first grant-writing seminar wrote, "really helpful"; "I received information that was very specific to my research; I have never gotten this before"; "very comprehensive"; "very valuable"; "lots of info I didn't know about the make-up of panels, how to contact the program officer, creating a timeline, etc".

Measures of partipcants' success showed that, compared to their pre-seminar status, they received significantly more funded grants, published more articles, and attended more conferences. Productivity increases from the first cohort of individuals in the grant writing workshops continued after their participation ended.
