Admission Requirements:
You must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for admission. Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the program.

A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution comparable in standard and content to a bachelor’s degree from Hunter College - College & University Transcripts

Submit a creative writing manuscript for the specific genre you are applying into: Poetry (up to 10 pages of poetry), Fiction (20-25 pages of a short story, the start of a novel), Creative Nonfiction (no more than 20 pages of non-fiction prose). Please note: all pages you send must be doubled-spaced and in a 12 point font. (For further detailed information, please contact the graduate advisor).

Two letters of recommendation from appropriate academic or professional references. Please do not send more than two letters of recommendation. The Committee will read only two.

A statement of purpose of approximately 500 words describing your objectives in undertaking graduate study, the relationship to your creative work, literary influences and why the MFA would be beneficial to your writing career.
- For Creative Nonfiction applicants only: please submit a 500-word response that answers or addresses any (or all) of the following:
What are the subjects or stories you are burning to tell?; Describe an experience in a writing class where you learned something new.; Why is creative nonfiction the medium you have chosen to express yourself in?; What books have guided and inspired you?; What about these books do you value most?; Broadly speaking, what subjects (or fields) are you most curious about?

Applicants whose native language is not English and who have taken all or part of their undergraduate education in a country where English is not the native language are required to submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The following minimum scores must be obtained:
- TOEFL iBT: 80/ Paper Based Test: 550/ Computer Based Test: 213
- IELTS: 6.5 Overall Band Score
