HBSON Strategic Plan

2025-2028

The Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing (HBSON) is committed to providing excellent, accessible education that creates transformational nurse leaders. Our strategic plan for 2025-2028 is our roadmap to chart the course for the future success of our school.

Our Mission
Cultivate collaborative nurse leaders promoting wellness and championing health equity in local and global communities through excellence in education, research, scholarship, and advocacy.

Our Vision
Shape nurse leaders advancing equity for a thriving, healthier world.

Our Values
HBSON's culture is defined and guided by our core values. We believe in:

  • Excellence – A culture where people feel inspired and empowered to be outstanding in every endeavor.
  • Collaboration – Working together in a multidimensional, multidirectional way with shared responsibilities and communication.
  • Equity – Fair access, justice, and support to address barriers to equal opportunity.
  • Belonging – Creating a welcoming environment that promotes collaborative engagement, collegiality, and communal growth.

Our Focus Areas

Building on our mission, vision, and values, members of the HBSON community have identified three strategic focus areas for 2025-2028:

Engage students in active experiential learning using technology, emerging pedagogies, and novel interprofessional collaborative strategies.

Objective 1.1: Advance excellence, innovation, and competency-based education across undergraduate and graduate programs.

    1. Provide professional development for faculty and staff annually.
    2. Redesign courses across programs.

Objective 1.2: Integrate simulation-based education in BS, MS, Advanced Certificate, and DNP programs.

    1. Integrate simulation-based education in up to one-third of undergraduate programs.
    2. Increase simulation-based education in MS, Advanced Certificate, and DNP programs by 10%.

Objective 1.3: Enhance the use of technology across undergraduate and graduate programs.

    1. Enhance the quality and content of online learning strategies across all modes of course delivery.
    2. Cultivate the responsible use of technology across programs.

Objective 1.4: Create interprofessional education opportunities across undergraduate and graduate programs.

    1. Establish interprofessional education partnerships.
    2. Integrate an interprofessional education curriculum in each educational program.

Establish a nationally ranked research program that promotes equity through excellence in scholarship and creative collaboration.

Objective 2.1: Create a research and scholarship innovation hub that facilitates creative collaboration among faculty, students, and external partners.

    1. Establish formal individual and group research mentorship processes for faculty and students.
    2. Increase student participation on research teams by 30%.
    3. Increase external research partnerships by 30%.
    4. Prioritize community-engaged research and scholarship.

Objective 2.2: Establish a collaborative peer review process that facilitates excellence in research and scholarly work.

    1. Increase the number and amount of funded grant applications.
    2. Increase the number of peer-reviewed publications.
    3. Increase the number of peer-reviewed podium presentations.
    4. Increase the number of peer-reviewed and/or keynote national/international presentations.

Objective 2.3: Generate research and scholarship that advances equity and includes diverse populations across the lifespan.

    1. Offer equity research and scholarship training annually.
    2. At least 50% of research and scholarship by faculty and doctoral students advances equity and includes diverse populations from across the lifespan.

Foster engagement and collaboration within our School of Nursing, Hunter College, and our communities of interest through mutually beneficial partnerships and innovative approaches.

Objective 3.1: Foster engagement and collaboration across sectors.

    1. Prioritize in-person attendance and inclusive engagement.
    2. Establish timely, clear patterns of communication that respect diverse perspectives.

Objective 3.2: Formalize mutually beneficial external partnerships and collaborations.

    1. Increase formalized collaborative agreements with external Hunter and community partners.
    2. Advance faculty and student engagement in professional organizations and community service.
    3. Engage with School of Nursing alumni network and activities.

Our Planning Process

Led by Dean Ann Marie Mauro, our strategic plan for 2025-2028 is the result of a collaborative effort involving our entire school community, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, and our clinical and community partners. The process began with a school-wide retreat to kick-start the beginning of the 2023-2024 academic year, where participants identified foundational themes that led to our updated mission, vision, and values statements.

In 2024-2025, members of our community actively refined our values and identified three core strategic focus areas, which are aligned with the broader missions of Hunter College and CUNY. These goals will serve as the roadmap that will guide our efforts over the next three years.
