Hunter WordPress Site Editor Advanced Training

Intro

This is a custom training course designed for the Site Editors.

  • Everyone should have already:
    • Taken the WordPress 101 course and Hunter WordPress Basic Training
  • This course consists of:
    1. First, watch the demo videos and read the demo notes
    2. Then, do the exercises and send your test page as instructed
    3. Then, we'll meeting to review your exercises and questions (IMPORTANT: do not create or edit any pages except for your test page until this step is completed)
  • By the end of this training you should be able to:
    • Understand the Site Editor role
    • Manage the Media Library
    • Add and remove Pages
    • Use the most common Modules needed to migrate OnesStop
    • Update navigation Menus 
  • Use the Knowledge Base - it contains everything covered today, and more - don’t forget to use search!
    • See links below to specific topics in the Knowledge Base

 


Roles

DEMO (see the video)

  • You are now Site Editors so you will see all content (e.g. pages, articles, etc.) on Hunter's site - but you should only edit your own site section pages and navigation (emailed to you)
  • IMPORTANT: Do not make any CMS changes to any other site section without being asked to by Lori Mazor or Jenn Houser
  • IMPORTANT: Do not edit anything in Events, News, People, or Open Lines
  • IMPORTANT: Close out of the CMS when you're done
  • TIP: Use Search to narrow CMS lists
  • TIP: Add ?edit to the end of any URL to open CMS to that page (e.g. https://www.hunter.cuny.edu/test-landing-page/?edit) - you must be logged in for this to work!

 


Manage Media Library

  • Media Library - folders and searching
    • TIP: Lists stay filtered for search terms until you remove them
    • IMPORTANT: Always name your media so it’s easy for you and others to find
    • IMPORTANT: Always file your media so it’s easy for you and others to find
    • IMPORTANT: You must have permission to use photos and videos, and credit appropriately, see Photo & Video Permissions to learn more
    • IMPORTANT: Do not delete media files unless you are absolutely certain they are not being used

 


Add and Remove Pages

DEMO (see the video)

  • Get Approval
    • IMPORTANT: Always get approval from leadership before making any updates (section leader name emailed to you)
    • For training, you’ve got approval to use password protected test pages
  • Login
  • Add New Page
    • Setup Page - Site Section, Parent, Template
    • Add Title
    • Add Top of Page Content
    • Add Main Content
    • Add Left Column Content
    • Preview - meets goals, preview on multiple resolutions
      • TIP: If the formatting of a Basic Content module looks funky, use Clear Formatting on the toolbar (looks like an eraser) to remove any formatting that may have been added by copying and pasting
    • Save Draft - changes are not published to live site
    • Get Approval - send link & password (to another WP User) or PDF (to non-WP Users) for review
    • Publish - changes are published to live site
  • Clone a Page
    • Creates a copy of a page which is helpful when you want to create a new page that is similar to another page
  • Remove a Page

Update Menu

  • Update the Left Menu
    • Add Row
      • Menu items - for top level navigation items
      • Sub Menu items - for secondary navigation items
    • Select Link Type
      • Internal - for new Hunter WP pages
      • External - for all other pages
    • Add Link Text
    • Add Link URL
      • Start typing the page name to narrow down the list of results
      • Use the url below the names to select the correct page
    • Update - changes are published to live site

EXERCISE: Create your own Test page (example, pw = test)

  1. Login
  2. Go to Pages & choose Add New
  3. Set up the Page
    • Add Title = [Your Name]'s Test (e.g. Paul's Test)
    • In Site Section box
      • Site Section = Test
    • In Page Attributes box
      • Parent = Test Landing Page
      • Template = Left Column - Content
    • In Publish box
      • Edit Visibility
      • Choose Password Protected
      • Enter Password = test
      • Click Save Draft
  4. Set up Content Expiration
    • Content Expiration = No
  5. Set up Top of Page
    • Click Add Module, Module = Hero Flexible
    • Optional Image = No Image
    • Header = This Is A Test Page
    • Show Bottom Rule = Yes
    • In Publish box, click Preview Changes, adjust if necessary and click Save Draft
  6. Set up Main Content
    • Click Add Module, Module = Basic Content
      • Section Header = WHAT'S NEW
      • Content = copy from example page (pw = test)
      • Show Bottom Rule = No
      • In Publish box, click Preview Changes, adjust if necessary and click Save Draft
    • Click Add Module, Module = Big Buttons
      • Header = HEALTH SCREENING TOOL
      • Button Source = Custom
      • Button Color = Purple
      • Big Text = HEALTH APP
      • Blurb = screen daily before visiting

  7. Set up Left Column
    • Click Add Module, Module = Menu
    • Menu Name (URL) = Test Nav (/menus/test-nav)
    • In Publish box, click Preview Changes, adjust if necessary and click Save Draft
  8. In the Publish box
    • Click Preview Changes
      • Does the page meet the website goals?
      • Does the page preview look good on multiple resolutions?
    • Click Save Draft
    • You've got approval to create this page for testing purposes so click Publish
    • Select the permalink under the page name and confirm the page looks as expected
  9. Close out of your Test page in the CMS

EXERCISE: Add your Test page to the Left Nav

  1. Login
  2. Go to Left Col Menus & select "Test Nav" menu
  3. Below Menu Items box (not below Sub Menu), click Add Row
    • Link Type = Internal
    • Link Text = [Your Name]'s Test (e.g. Paul's Test)
    • Page Link = [Your Name]'s Test (e.g. Paul's Test)
  4. In Sub Menu Box, click Add Row
    1. Link Type = Internal
    2. Link Text = Test Sub Page
    3. Page Link = Test Sub Page (/test-landing-page/test-child-page/test-sub-page)
  5. In the Publish box, click Update
  6. On the Test page, confirm your page name appears in the left nav & links to the correct page
  7. Close out of Test Student menu in the CMS
