Hunter College alumna Beverly Emers ‘19 makes her curatorial debut at BronxArtSpace with “Giving Light: An Art Antidote to Gun Violence.” Through the lens of a mother, community organizer, and Bronx resident, Emers presents an exhibit of diverse forms of expression aimed to provoke thought, emotion, conversation, and a call to action about gun violence as a public health crisis. The exhibit features 10 artists, including Hunter College alumnus Nicky Enright (MFA ‘08).

The exhibit is just the latest chapter in Emers’ remarkable story, one that includes years in and out of Rikers Island Correctional Facility, and one which demonstrates that with commitment, passion, and a second chance, anything is possible.

Emers earned her Associate’s Degree from Bronx Community College before transferring to Hunter, where she was admitted to the Community Scholars Program, which supports students who are interested in civic-minded social justice and who have an established record of meaningful community engagement.

Emers, who graduated in May of 2019, remains active in the Hunter community, having appeared as a panelist on a recent program, “Policing: Reform, Defund, or Abolish?,” part of Hunter’s Speaking of Justice series.

“Giving Light: An Art Antidote to Gun Violence” runs at BronxArtSpace through April 8.
