Hunter Alumna Wins Luce Scholarship

March 4, 2025

Christina Valeros

Hunter alumna Christina Valeros MHC ’21 has won a Luce Scholarship, which funds immersive professional experiences in Asia for post-graduates.

Valeros, who this year is working for the New York City Department of Small Business Services, will embed with an organization in Asia next year to learn about how different regulatory and programmatic landscapes can support small businesses.

The Luce Scholars Program selects some 15 to18 emerging leaders annually, sending them to Asia to deepen their ties and understanding of Asian countries, cultures, and people. Valeros is the sixth Hunter alum to win the Luce during the last eight years and the seventh in Hunter’s history.

At Hunter, Valeros earned a bachelor’s in human biology and a certificate in public policy, graduating with a GPA of 3.98. After graduating in 2021, Valeros won a Fulbright Scholarship to teach in Spain. The following year, she was a New York City Urban Fellow, working for the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission. She is committed to advancing economic opportunity for communities of color, especially entrepreneurs.

She thanked Stephen Lassonde, director of The Ruth & Harold Newman Office of Prestigious Scholarships and Fellowships, and Linh An, Hunter College AANAPISI Project Multilingual Learning Specialist, for their guidance and support.

Hunter’s Office of Prestigious Scholarships and Fellowships has a stellar record of accomplishment in preparing students for competitive scholarships and fellowships. In recent years, the college has produced two Rhodes, three Marshall, seven Schwarzman, six Luce, eight Goldwater, and 39 Fulbright Scholars, among many other prestigious awardees.
