Hunter College kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month September 15 with events, conversations, and upcoming special announcements.

The Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College, Centro, is having an open house at its Library and Archives at the Silberman School of Social Work in East Harlem from 2 pm to 5 pm on September 19. Stop by to learn more about its upcoming renovation plans and accessible resources.

The open house will be followed at 6 pm with a “Cafecito” with authors Marisol Negron and Matti Steinitz discussing the revolutionary notes of Afro-Latin Soul and Salsa. For more Centro events during Hispanic Heritage Month and throughout the year, click here.

Hunter College has received recognition for serving Hispanics.

The U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has named Hunter College a leading Fulbright Hispanic Serving Institution each year since 2021.

The designation recognizes Hunter’s noteworthy support for Latino Fulbright exchange participants and robust attainment of Fulbright scholarships. It highlights Hunter's strength as a destination for international students and scholars.

It also is a testament to Hunter’s diversity and the power of public institutions to democratize education. Hunter’s student population is about a quarter Hispanic, a third immigrants, and almost three quarters minorities. About 85% of its entering classes come from New York City public schools. Each semester offers us an opportunity to deepen our individual learning and strengthen the shared knowledge, histories, and relationships that sustain Hispanic heritage.
