A new graduate student in Hunter’s School of Education has won a New York City Public Schools’ 2025 Big Apple Award.

Gabriela Garcia De La Noceda, a bilingual special-education teacher in an integrated co-teaching classroom, at P.S. 243 The Weeksville School, was nominated by students, families, teachers, administrators, and community members for her exceptional work.

“We are thrilled to congratulate Gabriela on this prestigious award and wish her much success in her studies,” said Klara and Larry Silverstein Dean of Education Julie Gorlewski. “She has already demonstrated that she is a phenomenal teacher, and we look forward to her future accomplishments here at the School of Ed and in the New York City public schools.”

The award shows the impact of Hunter’s School of Education. Founded in 1870 as New York City’s first teacher-preparation school, the school exemplifies the college’s role as an anchor institution. Steeped in history and focused on the future, it strives to advance scholarship that enriches our understanding and improves the conditions of our communities. Its faculty, staff, and students positively impact the lives of individuals, families, and communities. Graduates from our programs contribute through a range of roles in pre-K–12 classrooms, schools, districts, research and policy centers, and community agencies.

Garcia De La Noceda is enrolled in the Advanced Certificate Program in Special Education (All Grades) at Hunter.

According to the school system, Garcia De La Noceda uses her personal experiences to shape her teaching. She celebrates diversity, language inclusivity, and honors every student’s identity. She creates a safe, supportive learning environment with strong routines and structures. A music enthusiast, she also weaves songs into her lessons and leads an after-school guitar program, which serves as a creative outlet and a tool for connection and engagement with students.

The 10 Big Apple recipients were also invitated to an awards ceremony, attended by Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos and other senior leaders.
