Hunter College President Nancy Cantor has joined Presidents for Latino Student Success, a national network of Excelencia in Education, which seeks to ensure that Latinos can thrive on campus.
Formed in 2014, Presidents for Latino Student Success comprises more than 150 U.S. postsecondary institutional leaders dedicated to accelerating Latino student success. Although the network represents only 5% of the thousands of colleges and universities nationally, its member institutions enroll 32% and graduates 34% of all Latino higher-education students.
Participation in the network enhances Hunter’s role as an anchor institution providing high-impact programs for diverse young change-makers. For more than 150 years, Hunter has been one of the nation’s most diverse higher-education institutions and one of its most effective engines of social mobility. Hunter’s student population is about a quarter Hispanic, a third immigrants, and almost three quarters minorities. About 88% of its entering classes come from New York City public schools.
The U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has named Hunter College a leading Fulbright Hispanic Serving Institution since 2021.The designation recognizes Hunter’s noteworthy support for Latino Fulbright exchange participants and robust attainment of Fulbright scholarships.
