Nursing Faculty Member Receives Prestigious Honor in Ireland

November 20, 2025

Ellen McCabe

She’s getting a royal welcome!

The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland is making Dr. Ellen McCabe, an assistant professor at the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing, a fellow by Examination of its Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery.

“The Fellowship by Examination is a prestigious award that is conferred by the faculty on registered nurses and midwives who have clearly articulated and expertly demonstrated how they have achieved, contributed, and developed their capacity, competence, and capability across four domains,” Dean Mary Godfrey of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery wrote to Dr. McCabe.

The domains focus on autonomy in nursing or midwifery, professional and clinical leadership, expert practice, and research based on experiences in practice.

Dr. McCabe will assume the title at a conferring ceremony in Dublin, Ireland, on December 8. She also won the 2025 Outstanding School Nurse Educator Award of the National Association of School Nurses.

“We congratulate Dr. McCabe for this great achievement and recognition of her impact and influence,” said Joan Hansen Grabe Dean of Nursing Dr. Ann Marie Mauro. “It shows the international stature of Hunter-Bellevue’s fine faculty.”

The honor underscores Hunter’s position as an anchor institution and high-impact training ground for the state’s best nurses and promoter of health equity for all populations. Hunter was ranked third out of 210 nursing schools in New York and in the top 10% nationally by nonprofit news site RN Careers. Our master’s program is also ranked 43rd in the United States by U.S. News & World Report’s Best Graduate Schools.

Dr. McCabe has carved out a role as an advocate for using school nurses as frontline providers for managing the health of immigrant children and their families. She and some colleagues have published a toolkit for school nurses to help them approach language and cultural differences in caring for immigrant children.

She has worked as a school nurse, a pediatric nurse practitioner, and a staff nurse. Her research interests involve school health, school nurse workload, and chronic illness management in the school setting.

About the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing

The Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing’s mission is to cultivate collaborative nurse leaders promoting wellness and championing health equity in diverse local and global communities through excellence in education, research, scholarship, and advocacy. Its vision is to shape nurse leaders advancing health equity for a thriving, healthier world.
