Political Science Professor Charles Tien, an expert on American politics and international elections, is taking over as the director of Hunter College’s Asian American Studies Program, Interim Provost Manoj Pardasani announced.

Tien, who will start in June, succeeds Professor Vivian Louie, who is stepping down after serving six years.

“We are pleased that Professor Tien will take on the administration of this important program,” Provost Pardasani said. “We look forward to its further blossoming under his stewardship. We are so grateful to Dr. Louie for her thoughtful, visionary and inclusive leadership. The program has grown into a nationally recognized model during her tenure.”

Tien also teaches at the Graduate Center, CUNY. He has served as department chair, was selected to be a Fulbright Scholar in American Politics at Renmin University in Beijing, and worked as a congressional staffer on Capitol Hill. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses on American politics, race and minorities in politics, voting and elections, American foreign policy, research methods, and polling. He has a PhD from the University of Iowa and a BA from the University of Michigan.

Hunter’s Asian American Studies Program plays a key role in combating anti-Asian hatred and violence, as well as offering diverse courses, programs, and research activities. More than 1,200 Hunter students take Asian American Studies courses each calendar year, with about 40 student minors every semester. Hunter’s students, alumni, faculty and staff are deeply engaged with Asian American communities in New York City and across the state.
