Arts Spaces

The Bertha and Karl Leubsdorf Gallery focuses on presenting historical and scholarly exhibitions and programming that provide new scholarship on important and often under-represented artists and art movements. Located on Hunter’s main campus, the gallery also hosts the BFA degree exhibition each Spring semester.

In the basement of the Thomas Hunter Hall is the clay workshop, which includes a Glaze Room, Kiln Room, Clay-mixing Room, Tool Room, Casting Room and Wheel Room.

The Art Department on the 11th floor houses fully equipped workshops for audio & video production, photography, printmaking, metal, wood and plaster, as well as a computer lab and painting and drawing studios

The 205 Hudson Gallery is dedicated to presenting exhibitions and programming that examine the impact of and critical issues around contemporary art. Located in Tribeca on Hunter’s MFA Studio Art Campus, the gallery also hosts the MFA thesis exhibitions each semester.

CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS (reopening 2026)

The Hunter MFA wood shop is located on the 2nd floor of the 205 Hudson building. The shop contains all major stationary equipment and hand tools. The Vibraclean ventilation system is powerful and connects to all major tools, providing good air quality and a safe work environment. Shop manager, Witts, offers mandatory shop training for all students at the beginning of each semester. He is also available two days a week to answer questions and maintain the equipment. Several work study students are available during the rest of the week to lend assistance.

The Baker Basement is an open room that converts into an 80 seat performance/ rehearsal space for student productions. It is located in the basement of the Baker Theatre Building.

Thanks to the generosity of Patty and Jay Baker, Hunter is the only theatre department in New York City with its own building. Located right on campus, the Baker Theatre Building holds six floors of classrooms, acting studios, a computer lab, sound design room, and a maker’s room for theatrical design. Performance and rehearsal spaces can be booked by Hunter Theater students through the Hunter Theater Department website.

The Frederick Loewe Theatre is a 50' x 54' black box performance space where most of the Theatre Department's productions are rehearsed, built, and staged. Located on the first floor of the landmark building named for Thomas Hunter, it was beautifully renovated in 1998 and is extremely flexible and intimate.

The Goldberg Studio, Hunter North 537, is an Acting Studio and performance space with a 50-seat flexible space. Props, set pieces, and a light and sound board are available in the studio.

Appel Hall is a state of the art rehearsal and performance space with seats for 100 and adjustable acoustic curtains and risers to fit all performance genres from rock to chamber music. This beautifully renovated space was made possible by a generous gift from Helen and Robert Appel.

The computer and keyboard laboratory has 24 stations each including a digital keyboard, computer, and midi interface coordinated by an instructor’s control panel. Each computer is loaded with notation software, sequencing software, and ear training software. This lab is used primarily for piano, music theory, and ear training classes. Classes in Music Technology and Computer Music are also taught in the computer and keyboard laboratory. The lab is open between class sessions for student use.

The Ida K. Lang Recital Hall is a 149-seat concert space with superb acoustics, designed by the architectural firm Abramowitz Kingsland Schiff and inaugurated in the spring of 1995. Used principally for musical performance, it also accommodates staged readings, lectures, symposia and performances requiring no wing space or stage depth. There is a Steinway C Grand Piano available and a Steinway D (used with permission by the Hunter College Music Department; a separate rental fee may apply).

Instrumental and vocal lessons are taught in teaching studios on the 4th floor of Hunter North. Equipped with Steinway grand pianos, music stands, and a library of chamber music and vocal literature, these studios are used for individual lessons, duo-piano coachings, or small chamber music ensemble rehearsals.

Two-Piano Studio (413 North Building) is a rehearsal room (15’ x 26’) suited for soloists, small chamber groups or a chamber choir. It is equipped with two Steinway B Grand Pianos, music stands and orchestra chairs. Optional equipment at extra cost: percussion (ask for list of available instruments) and one-manual Dowd harpsichord.

The Music Department has individual practice rooms, as well as a percussion studio and a chamber music rehearsal studio. Practice rooms are equipped with grand or upright pianos and music majors may use the practice rooms on a daily basis by signing up for a time slot at the beginning of the semester in the department office.

The Blackbox is used for classes, shows, screenings, and events for the Film and Media Division.

Each machine is equipped with Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash, and Max/MSP. Students also have access to scanners, and a HP Laser printer. The computers are routinely checked and maintenance to ensure that students are working on the latest and most up-to-date software and hardware as to prepare them for real world work environment. This lab is used for media production courses but when not occupied, it is an open lab for students to work.

The radio room, located next to the skybridge in Hunter West, is the home of Hunter College's radio station, WHCS (Where Hunter College Speaks). The station is made up of a room for socializing, a broadcasting room, and a production room for live broadcasts.

The Film and Media department has three screening rooms used for classes and other screenings, on the fifth floor of the North building.

Found on the 6th floor of Thomas Hunter Hall is the dance department, which includes dance studios 605, 609, 700, 520, and 601.

The Zabar Art Library houses reference and research collections for the study of Art and Art History. The collections include: Hunter College Art and Art History faculty publications, current art periodicals, major reference works for art and art History, catalogues raisonnés for hundreds of artists, Hunter College gallery publications, and a circulating collection of recently published art books. The library is a quiet space with a view of Manhattan, open to all Hunter students.

The Student Artist Lounge is available for all arts students (Theatre, Dance, Film/Media Studies, Music, Studio Art) to hold student club meetings, rehearsals, workshops, etc. The room includes sofas, a large conference table, chairs, and a TV. It also currently is home to a display of student made artworks.

The Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College is a vibrant cultural hub on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Each season, they host over 200 live performances, bringing an eclectic mix of world-class music, theater, and dance.
