Mabou Mines is an avant-garde theater company that supports experimental performance and inventive re-imaginings of classic theater works. The company was founded in 1970 by a group of influential young New York artists, including JoAnne Akalaitis, Philip Glass, and Lee Breuer. Each year, Mabou Mines holds the performance initiative SUITE/space, which provides artistic advisement, rehearsal space, a stipend, and a performance venue to New York City-based artists of color.
