Just a 20 minute walk from Hunter, you can find The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the largest museum in the United States. It offers an encyclopedic collection of art and objects from throughout more than 5,000 years of history. The museum is home to the world’s oldest surviving piano, Monet’s “Water Lily Pond,” the Egyptian Temple of Dendur, many other famous artworks, and of course, the annual Met Gala. In the summer, the museum installs large artworks on its rooftop overlooking Central Park.
The Met Cloisters, another location governed by the Met, is situated in Washington Heights. It is a museum that specializes in European medieval art and architecture, with a focus on the Romanesque and Gothic periods.
