The vast archive of the New York Public Library contains treasures ranging from a draft of the Declaration of Independence to locks of famous writers’ hair. With more than 92 locations in every borough except Brooklyn (which has its own library network), it’s the largest public library system in the US. The library’s main branch on Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street is guarded by its two iconic marble lions, Patience and Fortitude.
