Signature Theatre is an influential nonprofit Off Broadway theatre devoted to supporting playwrights. Signature was founded in 1991 in a black box theatre on Bond Street in Manhattan by James Houghton, who had worked as an actor, director, waiter, and carpenter before starting the theater at age 33. The theatre now occupies a large new venue on 42nd Street. Signature has dedicated entire seasons to one living playwright, and has featured the work of more than 30 playwrights in residence. Signature, its productions, and its artists have received more than 100 awards, including a Pulitzer Prize and the first New York City Regional Theater Tony Award in 2014.
