The Joyce Theater

In 1981 dancers Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld bought an abandoned pornographic theater in the Chelsea. With the help of an architect, they worked for two years to restore the building’s once elegant Art Deco exterior and install a functioning 472-seat theater inside. Today the Joyce is home to more than 400 domestic and international dance companies, offering diverse, popular and challenging performances to over 150,000 audience members a year. The Theater also offers off-site presentations at venues ranging from Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn's Invisible Dog Art Center, and outdoor programming at Hudson River Park.
