Title: Pre-Health Group Advising

Description: Hunter Pre-Health advisers will hold group advising sessions for students with Pre-Health questions. This session will be held in a classroom setting and will allow students to collectively ask questions of the Pre-Health advising team and to learn from their Pre-Health peers. Title: Mental Health: The Unspoken Pre-Health Requirement

Description: This event is an interactive talk given by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) on Campus at Hunter College. Following our mission of establishing a supportive community on campus and destigmatizing mental illness, we are going to talk about major issues a typical college student may be dealing with: depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. By discussing situations and stories that may sound way too familiar to students, particularly in pre-health field, we are hoping to communicate a better understanding of importance of one’s mental health, and increase one’s knowledge on things one can do to help themselves.We will be discussing these topics in the context of the environment a pre-health student would usually find themselves to be in, and will touch upon some specific examples such as starting school as a pre-health student; stigma in minority communities, as well as medical fields; self-medication; and others.

Title: Stop the Bleed training for Pre-Health Students

Description: The ability to recognize life-threatening bleeding in someone who is injured and effectively assist that person can save a life. A person can bleed to death in under five minutes, and it often takes longer than that for medical personnel to arrive. Members of the public can be the difference between life and death in a trauma situation if they know what to do. STOP THE BLEED is a program that teaches basic bleeding-control techniques including wound packing and tourniquet applications. This program is usually taught to medical students however we have the opportunity for Hunter College students to learn these techniques in classes taught by physicians from Weill Cornell Medicine. There is also the option to receive a certificate at the end of the training. During Stop the Bleed training, you will learn how to: Determine if an area is safe for you to proceed toward a victim to provide assistance Identify any nearby tools to assist you such as a publicly placed bleeding control kit or everyday items that can be used to control bleeding. Use your hands to apply direct pressure at the site of the wound to stop bleeding Pack a deep wound with cloth or gauze to control bleeding Correctly apply a tourniquet to an injured limb to stop bleeding Keep the victim calm until help arrives.

Title: Suturing Clinic

Description: Come and learn how to suture. The term “suture” is used to refer both to a specific technique for closing a wound, in which the sides of the wound are stitched together, and to the individual stitches involved in the wound closure. Title: Bioethics Speaker Event: Dr. Francesca Anselmo on Ethical Dilemmas in Academia (Q&A)

Description: Join the Society of Bioethics and Medicine at our first speaker event of the year! Dr. Francesca Anselmo earned her PhD in Neuroscience and Optics at the Paris Descartes University. She is a BioBus community scientist in which she emphasizes the need for more science outreach. Her mission is to help encourage and shape the next generation of students to become scientists and become active in formulating their ideas. Title: SCORE Recruitment Presentation for Macaulay & Yalow Scholars

Description: SCORE is an eight-week full-time program designed to encourage undergraduates to consider careers in cancer research. Each student is paired with a research mentor who is a member of the MSK faculty to do a clinical or laboratory research project. The program includes career development activities such as training in scientific presentations. At the end of the program, each student writes a 1-page abstract and gives a 10-minute Powerpoint presentation at a research symposium at MSK. Program Dates: Monday, June 1-Friday July 24, 2020; full-time. - SCORE is open to Hunter freshman, sophomore, junior and post-baccalaureate students. Seniors graduating in June 2020 are not eligible to apply. Dr. Tom Catena has been a CMMB medical volunteer in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan since 2008. He is the medical director and sole doctor at Mother of Mercy Hospital, which serves nearly 750,000 people. Patients seek out Dr. Tom for ailments ranging from fractures, diarrhea, thyroid disease, and cancer, to an increasing number of victims of bombing attacks and malnourishment, spurred on by conflict in the region. Dr. Catena’s dedication is so extraordinary that he was listed as one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in 2015 and was nominated in 2016 for the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity. He graduated from Brown University with a bachelor's in mechanical engineering and later received his medical degree from Duke University on a U.S. Navy scholarship.
