Peer Health Exchange Volunteering Information Session
he Peer Health Exchange’s mission is to give teenagers the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy decisions. The Peer Health Exchange trains college students to teach a health curriculum in low-income high schools that lack comprehensive health education. This is a great community service activity and the Peer Health Exchange program offers opportunities for personal and professional growth. It is also a great way to help you build your Pre-Health Portfolio. Join us to learn about how you can become a Peer Health Educator.
Multiple Mini Interviews: How to Prepare for the MMI
Over forty medical, dental, and osteopathic schools of medicine use the Multiple Mini Interview method of selecting applicants to their program. This workshop will explain the goal of the interview format, what you can expect, what you need to know to be successful, what to do when the scenario goes wrong, as well as offer a practice scenario, and resources for further exploration.
Student Doctor Speaker Series- Slavena Nissan
Join us for an engaging discussion with Slavena Salve Nissan. Slavena is currently a third-year medical student at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She graduated from the Macaulay Honors program at Hunter College with a major in biology in 2015, and is an aspiring physician-writer who has interests in poetry and the medical humanities.
Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine Linkage Visit (For Post Bacc Certificate Students only)
This event is for Post-Bacc students ONLY. Do not register for this event if you are are not a Post-Bacc student in the certificate program. Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine will host Hunter Post Bacc certificate program students for a linkage information session and campus tour on Monday, September 24th. To qualify or be considered for the Hofstra linkage program, you must have a 3.75 undergraduate GPA and maintain a 3.75 GPA or higher while enrolled in the Hunter College Post Bacc program. If you are interested in attending you must RSVP by September 3rd.
Pre-Health Group Advising
Hunter Pre-Health advisers will hold a group advising sessions for students with Pre-Health questions. This session will be held in a classroom setting and will allow students to collectively ask questions of the Pre-Health advising team and to learn from their Pre-Health peers. All are welcome, especially first-year students!
2019-2020 Committee Letter Application Workshop
The Committee Letter workshop organized by the Pre-Health Office to provide each undergraduate applicant or re-applicant with valuable information about preparing your Committee Letter Application and your medical, dental or veterinary school application. This includes guidelines for preparing Personal Statements and other parts of the application. These guidelines are presented to help applicants to craft their personal statements and other parts of their Committee Letter Application. In order to submit a Committee Letter Application and receive either a committee letter or letter packet you must attend one of the workshops. This is MANDATORY for all first-time applicants as well as re-applicants who would like to have previously submitted Committee Letters updated. Committee Letter Document Requirement 1. 8-10 course evaluations- You must have at least 3 course evaluations from science courses (one from Biology, one from Chemistry, and one from Physics preferred). 2. 6 letters of recommendation- You must have one letter from a Hunter science (biology, chemistry or physics) faculty member, one letter from a clinical supervisor/doctor or health practitioner and, one from a research supervisor. 3. The 8-10 course evaluations and 6 letters of recommendation must all be submitted by February 1st, 2019.
Clinical Volunteering 101 for Pre-Health Students
Shari Sirkin Kaplan, the Volunteer Program Director at Mount Sinai Hospital will be conducting a workshop about clinical volunteering and will also recruit students to serve as volunteers in the Emergency Department. This is a highly sought after placement for anyone interested in pursuing an education and career in health. This is a required workshop for Pre-Health students.
National Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives (AHHE) Mentorship Program Information Session
National Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives (AHHE)Mentorship program is seeking undergraduate and graduate students interested in healthcare leadership for their 2019 program. Promising students are matched with executive mentors dedicated to promoting access to healthcare underrepresented communities. Applications are being accepted until October 5, 2018.
Fall 2018 Pre-Health Clubs and Organizations Fair
The Pre-Health Club fair is an opportunity for Hunter students to learn about all the Pre-Health clubs and organizations that exist on campus. Hometeam Health Caregivers Information Session
Hometeam is looking for students who want to get hands-on patient experience. Caregivers will receive training and one-on-one coaching from their Managers and Clinical Team.
Gatekeeper Training
Gatekeeper training is a workshop that is meant to help members of the Hunter College community be able to better identify signs of emotional distress in other students and once these signs have been identified, to learn ways in order to best approach conversations with students to support them and connect them to supportive resources available to them here on campus. The major goals of this training are the following; · Increase competence and confidence in knowing when and how to: identify at-risk/struggling students, effectively engage them in discussion and refer them for additional support/help · Increase knowledge of support resources available to all students at Hunter College including those who have identified students who are at-risk/struggling ( CWS, BRT, Public Safety), when it’s appropriate to reach out to each and how to do so · Raise awareness of the valuable and unique position gatekeepers are in to connect students to needed help and support.

Weill Cornell Medical College’s Research Associate Program Information Session
Billie Johnsson will discuss Weill Cornell Medical College’s Research Associate Program. The Weill Cornell Medical College’s Research Associate Program (RAP) exposes college and post-baccalaureate students to research activities within the emergency department setting, specifically at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine (NYP/WCM). Program participants work in the Emergency Department between 8:00 AM – 12:00 AM, 7 days a week, to recruit patients for participation in research studies. The Research Associate Program is a research program that occurs in a clinical setting. The program is designed to involve Research Associates in many elements of the performance of research while providing opportunities for observing clinical practice in the NYP/WCM emergency department and for extended interaction with clinical providers and patients. The program provides educational and practical experiences that increase knowledge about research methodology and clinical care and may enhance participant’s application to medical or graduate school.
Medical Trauma First Aid Training
Immediate Response of Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence & Trauma-Informed Care for Health Providers The presentation will focus on how to respond when someone presents to a medical organization following a sexual assault or domestic violence incident. I will discuss the health-related options, including timeframes for forensic exams and prophylaxis. This will include a discussion on what trauma-informed care entails and how to use it in your practice. This will provide a deeper understanding of the existing resources, as well as allow one to be more confident that they can respond and engage in a way that is helpful and empathic.
