This year the Einstein Community Health Outreach (ECHO) free clinic will be hosting its annual summer program for pre-health students. ECHO is the first student-organized clinic that opened in the New York metropolitan area. Since then, ECHO has been committed to serving all uninsured patients. Our mission is to provide free primary care for people who lack health insurance or cannot afford insurance and healthcare.

Through the ECHO summer program, we hope to help contribute to the development of students interested in health careers by exposing them to what it is like to work in our free clinic and by teaching them about the psychosocial and medical challenges faced by our patient population and other underserved communities. Typically, we invite our volunteers to fill many of the administrative roles in-clinic. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our program will most likely be held entirely virtually.

By participating in this program, students will be able to learn and interact with physicians, Albert Einstein faculty members, medical students, and other key members of the ECHO family. In addition, we plan to include virtual patient experiences, in which students will be able to actively contribute to the weekly functions of the ECHO free clinic by providing health education, companionship, and translation services (if applicable) to our ECHO patients.

We are also committed to providing our volunteers with support beyond the conclusion of the program through our mentorship program. Each volunteer will be given the opportunity to be matched with a medical student mentor that they can look to for guidance during their pre-health journey.
