First Semester Registration

Commit & Deposit

Students who have committed and deposited by May 1st will receive an e-mail with information on how to access their New Student Page (NSP). The NSP outlines everything you will need to do to successfully get set-up at Hunter College. It will contain a Registration Booklet that will introduce your program and let you know which courses and specific sections you'll be registering for in your first semester. At Hunter, deposits are waived automatically for students who have a certain Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) on their FAFSA. Once you accept your offer of admission, CUNYfirst automatically adjusts the deposit if you qualify for this waiver.

You will want to spend time reviewing the listed courses and prepare yourself to register on June 1st beginning at 9:00 AM. Set-up your reminder now as you'll want to sign up right away!

You can use Schedule Builder in CUNYfirst to view your Enrollment Appointment (the earliest date and time you can self-register) and to begin to make any necessary adjustments. You will only be able to enroll into courses starting on the date and time noted under Enrollment Appointment. For example, June 1st at 9:00 AM would mean that your "Get This Schedule" button will begin to work starting that date and time.

Priority Registration begins after your first semester so make sure you promptly register on June 1st!

If you need to modify your schedule because you already have AP/transfer credit for a list course, remove that course and use the Advanced Search feature to search for courses by Hunter Core requirement.

Don't know which Hunter Core requirements you still need? Visit DegreeWorks.cuny.edu to see all your requirements.

AP Scores and Registering to Higher Level Classes

¡    Many of you are awaiting AP scores. Scores are usually released during the first week in July and then must be sent to us via the College Board. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will need time to post them to your transcript.  Once your scores post to your transcript, you will then be able to swap into a higher level course as indicated by your AP results. Alternatively, academic departments may at their discretion accept an unofficial transcript to place you into a higher level course.

Financial Aid Package & Federal Work Study

You should be able to see your Financial Aid package on CUNYfirst after May 1st. In general if your aid exceeds the cost of tuition and fees you can expect to receive a refund. How you use the refund is entirely up to you. Communication regarding Work Study is sent out towards the end of August/beginning of September. Students receive a link to an online system where all the departments list their work study needs. If awarded Federal Work Study, you will be able to apply for any openings. The e-mail will include information regarding how many hours you qualify for. Be sure to check your spam/junk e-mail!

Common Registration Issues

CUNYfirst is indicating I do not meet the pre-requisites requirement, Department Permission is required, or there is a hold preventing registration:

Search the class and view its course notes for any special requirements such as membership in a student group or courses that you must have completed or be in the processing of completing this semester. If you meet criteria and CUNYfirst does not allow registration, please reach out to the academic department offering your course directly. Visit the listed departmental website to locate their contact information   http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/academics/majors Only academic departments can issue course permissions.

Please note that due to high volume, departments may take a few business days to respond to you. Please allow at least 72 business hours before following up with them

If a course requires Department Permission, check to see if all sections require permission or only specific sections. If you meet all pre-requisites and there is no student group requirement, contact the academic department directly.

If there is a hold on your account, you must visit the Student Center in CUNYfirst and resolve the listed holds under Holds. Clicking in each hold will tell you whether its blocking registration and what needs to be done to resolve the holds. Note that holds like Do Not Cancel, and No Late Fees have no effect on your ability to register.

I am receiving an error message indicating Invalid Enrollment Appointment:

You have not reached the date and time on which you can begin to register. To access this specific date and time please go to CUNYfirst, launch Schedule Builder and navigate to the term you are registering for. You will see the date and time next to the session you are registering for. For example:

Regular Academic Session Nov 10, 2020 2:00pm to Feb 4, 2021 11:59pm

My schedule is exceeding the enrollment term limit of 17.5 credits:

First-year students cannot register for more than 17.5 credits.

My desired course has closed and I need this course according to my registration booklet:

We are unable to secure seats for students in closed courses. Please consider an alternative requirement such an outstanding Hunter Core, Hunter Focus, Pluralism & Diversity, and or language requirement as listed on your DegreeWorks page. Please also notify your Academic Advisor about the change for final approval.

If the course in question has filled your desired section, your enrollment will need to be in a section with remaining seats. Please also notify your Academic Advisor about the change for final approval.

We understand that you may have other scheduled obligations such as work but unfortunately are unable to enroll students into any closed courses or sections outside of those reflected on the registration booklet.
