If you don't see your question below, you can submit your question via e-mail to socadvis@hunter.cuny.edu or you can visit the advising office.

General Questions

Do I have to take Social Statistics (Soc 241) if I have completed another statistics course?
No. The course in Social Statistics may be waived for students who have completed math statistics or psychological statistics with satisfactory grades. However, you must still make up the 3 credits in sociology by taking another sociology course in its place.

Sociology as a Major

How many credits in sociology do I need to major in sociology?
A major in sociology requires a minimum of 30 credits.

What courses are required to major in sociology?
Visit the Major Requirements page for full details.

If I major in sociology, what are the requirements for the minor?
A minor of 12 credits is optional. A minor may be taken in any discipline that is recognized as a major at Hunter as well as any of several interdisciplinary programs.

Can courses used to satisfy the requirements for sociology as a major be simultaneously used to satisfy the distribution requirements?
No. None of the courses used to satisfy the requirements for sociology as a major can be used as well to satisfy the distribution requirements. However, if you earn more than 30 credits in sociology, then the additional credits earned can be counted towards satisfying the distribution requirements.

If I am majoring in sociology and have another major, do I need to have a minor as well?
No. As long as you secure the approval of both major departments, you do not need to have a minor.

If I am majoring in sociology and have elementary education as a collateral major, do I need to have a minor?
No. As long as you have an academic major such as sociology.

Sociology as a Minor

If sociology is my minor, what specific courses do I need to take?
Your major department determines what specific courses you need to take in sociology.

Can courses used to satisfy the requirements of a minor (with a major in sociology) be used to satisfy the distribution requirements?
Yes. One course can be used to simultaneously satisfy the requirements of a minor (with a major in sociology) and the distribution requirement.

Transfer Questions

If I have taken courses at other colleges or universities, how many credits towards my major and my minor have to be earned at Hunter?
At least one half of the credits taken in sociology (12) and one half of the credits taken in a minor (6) need to be earned at Hunter.

These are the questions most frequently asked. The answers were compiled by Professor Mueller and Wood during the time they served as the departmental advisors. However, you may have still another question. If it is a question of common interest, we would like to add your question to this collection -- along with a hopefully exhaustive answer.

You can submit your question via e-mail to socadvis@hunter.cuny.edu or you can visit the advising office.
