Building Future Leaders

A person standing in a door way

An Inclusive Approach

At the Sorensen Center, we prepare students to be social justice leaders and to leverage the diversity of their knowledge and experiences to strengthen peace and justice in New York City, across the United States, and around the world.

“The world needs young peacemakers, enthused and energized, with the determination to seek justice for all. I hope that the Sorensen Center will be a beacon of inspiration to many of them.”

Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations

CONNECTING LOCAL TO GLOBAL

Sorensen Center Fellows work on issues of peace and justice domestically and globally, connecting the challenges here in the United States to experiences around the world. As an anchor institution serving the community around Hunter College we have a particular focus on New York City.

The First Decade

Over our first decade, the Sorensen Center has supported more than 200 Student Fellows from CUNY School of Law who provided critical legal support and undertook original research on issues of peace and justice in 18 countries, 12 states and all 5 boroughs of New York City.

Sorensen Center Fellows have addressed a wide range of human and civil rights issues including immigration, criminal justice, economic justice, gender justice, education, and voting rights.

With their training from CUNY School of Law, Fellows provided direct legal services, contributed to impact litigation, conducted policy research, and engaged with impacted communities.
