Our History

Sorensen Center Fellows meet with Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Sorensen Center Scholar-in-Residence Judge Rosemary Barkett.

Originally established in 2014 at CUNY School of Law to train public interest lawyers, the Center moved to Hunter College in 2025 to expand our work to include students engaged in an array of academic pursuits.

The inspiration for the Sorensen Center for International Peace and Justice is the life of the late Theodore (Ted) Sorensen, who made an indelible mark nationally and internationally as advisor and speechwriter to President John F. Kennedy. In private practice in the decades that followed, he championed democracy and development in regions around the world.

The Center fosters Ted’s legacy by nurturing students dedicated to public service, empowering tomorrow’s leaders to preserve and enhance the ideals of peace and justice.
