Change of Status

If you are currently in the United States under a different nonimmigrant status and wish to pursue full-time studies, you may need to apply for a change of status to F-1. As an F-1 student, you will be required to pay out-of-state tuition for as long as you maintain F-1 status. While your change of status is pending, most visa categories (except B-1/B-2 and F-2) allow you to register for any number of credits.

Once your change of status to F-1 is approved, you must maintain full-time enrollment during the spring and fall semesters. If you plan to change your status while inside the U.S., you must remain in the country until the process is complete. If you decide to travel abroad during this time, you must notify your DSO. In that case, you will need an Initial Attendance I-20 and must apply for the F-1 visa at the U.S. embassy in your home country. The change of status process depends on your current visa type and situation, so it is important to carefully review the requirements before beginning your application.

Change of status applicants in A, G, or NATO status must follow a different procedure. In addition to obtaining a Change of Status I-20, these individuals are required to complete and mail the paper application forms I-539, I-566, and G-1149. Applicants in V, T, or U status should follow the standard Change of Status to F-1 process, which involves submitting the required forms and supporting documents as described in the Change of Status Required Documents Checklist.

If you are currently in the U.S. on a B-1/B-2 visitor visa and wish to begin academic studies, you must first apply for a change of status to F-1. Visitors in B-1/B-2 status are not permitted to start classes until USCIS has officially approved their F-1 status. While your application is
pending, you must also make sure to maintain a valid B-1/B-2 status, which may include renewing your I-94 record at least two months before it expires. Because the process can take several months, it is required that you pay the premium processing fee of $1,685 to help avoid delays that could affect your ability to start your program on time. Careful planning is essential to ensure there are no interruptions in your academic timeline.

Students currently in F-2 dependent status may apply for a change of status to F-1. This process allows F-2 dependents to transition into full-time academic study in the U.S. and gain all the benefits associated with F-1 student status, such as work authorization for on- campus employment and eligibility for practical training. If you plan to change your status from F2 to F-1 once you apply, you cannot leave the U.S.; if you do, you must instead schedule an appointment at the U.S. embassy in your home country to apply for the F-1 visa. As long as the F-1 is in active status their F-2 status is considered active. While you are waiting for the F-1 status to be approved you can only attend school on a part time basis (Maximum 6 credits).
