Salud Scholars

A public health learning community rooted in wellness, equity, and action.

The Salud Public Health Scholars cohort in Hunter College’s Nutrition and Public Health (NPH) Department in the School of Health Professions, is an immersive, dynamic program designed to cultivate the next generation of public health leaders. Rooted in Hunter’s commitment to equity and excellence, the program nurtures a diverse community of future public health leaders dedicated to promoting health and advancing social justice.

Program Overview

Upon admission to the Public Health Cohort, students embark on a carefully structured journey that bridges rigorous coursework with real-world application. The program begins with a shared 3-credit “Introduction to Public Health” seminar, fostering strong peer connections and foundational knowledge. In subsequent semesters, cohort members will develop the skills needed to effectively answer a vast array of public health questions related to disease prevention, violence, healthcare systems, and community well-being.

Housed in East Harlem, the program provides unique access to one of the city’s most vibrant and diverse communities. Students take advantage of nearby hospitals, community-based organizations, schools, and public agencies to deepen their understanding of health disparities, food systems, and urban public health challenges.

The Salud Scholars Program builds on this foundation, offering a more intentional, cohort-based experience that fosters leadership, applied learning, and community engagement.
