Salud Scholars

A program grounded in public health, prevention, and evidence-based approaches to enhance well-being

Salud derives from the Latin word for "health," a foundational term that has long represented ideas of safety, wellness, and the common good — values that guide the program’s commitment to advancing equity and community across the health sciences. Housed in Hunter College’s Nutrition and Public Health Department within the School of Health Professions, this immersive and dynamic program cultivates the next generation of public health leaders and evidence-based practitioners. Rooted in Hunter’s commitment to excellence and equity, the Salud program fosters a diverse community dedicated to advancing health and social justice.

Program Overview

Upon admission to the Salud Cohort, students embark on a carefully structured and guided journey that bridges coursework with real-world application. The program allows students to channel their interests in public health, social justice, and policy — or their passion for science, nutrition, and wellness — into meaningful career pathways in public health and/or the health professions. Through coursework, mentorship, research, and community engagement, Salud Scholars develop the knowledge and skills to advance health equity and improve lives across communities. Students graduate prepared for work in public health and the health professions.

The Salud program is located in East Harlem — one of the city’s most vibrant and diverse communities. The Nutrition and Public Health Department’s strong anchor in this neighborhood  provides unique access for Salud students to take advantage of learning from and contributing to nearby hospitals, community-based organizations, schools, and public agencies. This exchange deepens Salud Scholars’ understanding of health disparities, food systems, and urban public health challenges.

The Salud Scholars Program builds on this foundation, offering a more intentional, cohort-based experience that fosters leadership, applied learning, and community engagement.

Learning Community & Mentorship

Engage in a cohesive learning community supported by faculty mentors, peer advisors, and alumni connections. Participate in regular cohort gatherings, workshops, and speaker series focused on pressing public health and wellness topics — including food access, nutrition, chronic disease prevention, emergency preparedness, and the science that informs public health policy and practice.

Capstone Research & Community Impact

The final-year Capstone Research Project is a collaborative, community-engaged initiative aimed to improve health outcomes. Students build a strong portfolio, get real-world experience, and present at Hunter's annual nutrition and public health symposium.
