My Story
My journey at Hunter College has been shaped by ongoing reflection, resilience, and the guidance of my older sister, a Hunter alumna whom I deeply admire. Entering college, I initially pursued a career that felt familiar and expected, which was the traditional medical school route. I was influenced by my family's expectations and the reputation that comes with becoming a physician, so I dedicated myself to this goal without fully realizing how it coincided with my own values. Over time, my experiences outside of the classroom made me reevaluate what I really wanted out of a career in healthcare.
Fortunately, I was directly exposed to collaborative teamwork and patient care by volunteering and working in clinical settings. These encounters made it clear that I was most interested in roles that required flexibility, direct patient engagement, and teamwork. As I shadowed Physician Assistants working closely with patients and physicians, I recognized that the PA profession better reflected the type of provider I aspire to be. Making this shift required honesty with myself and the courage to move away from a path I had once felt obligated to pursue.
Throughout this transition, my sister remained a valuable source of support. She reassured me that redefining my goals was not a failure but a sign of growth. She introduced me to the Pre-Health Program and encouraged me to apply to the Yalow Scholars Program, both of which have played a significant role in my academic and professional development. With her guidance, I learned how to seek mentorship, utilize campus resources, and advocate for my goals with confidence.
As a Yalow Scholar, I balance a rigorous science curriculum, honors coursework, and hands-on clinical experiences through careful planning and adaptability. In addition to my academic responsibilities, I work part-time as a Medical Assistant in an OB/GYN office, which has further strengthened my time-management skills and deepened my commitment to women’s health. My motivation to pursue a career that emphasizes compassion and continuity of care has been strengthened by working directly with patients during vulnerable moments, from annual exams to vulnerable visits. While the demands of balancing coursework, honors obligations, and employment can be challenging, the experience has helped me grow more confident, organized, and prepared for a future in healthcare. In addition to helping me build my academic foundation, Hunter College has given me the autonomy to decide on my own path with the help of mentorship, meaningful work, and self-reflection.
