Pre-Health File
Pre-Health File FAQs
A Pre-Health file is used to determine your eligibility for receiving a Committee Letter, which is required for certain health professions graduate programs. Students will be evaluated on the quality of their Pre-Health files to meet program requirements.
After all of the Pre-Health program requirements have been met -- undergraduate, second-degree, and non-degree students may apply to open their Pre-Health file. Please note that non-degree students are not eligible to receive a Committee Letter.
Please click on the applicable link below to view the steps and requirements that need to be met prior to opening your Pre-Health file:
Students who intend to open a Pre-Health file may begin collecting course evaluations from instructors immediately. Letters of recommendation cannot be collected until a Pre-Health File has been opened.
Students must apply to open their Pre-Health file no later than their first semester of Sophomore year at Hunter College. Transfer students must open their Pre-Health file by the end of their first year at Hunter College.
Pre-Health files must be open for at least 1 academic year prior to applying for a Committee Letter.
If your Pre-Health file is open for less than 1 year, the expectation for your Health Professions Graduate School application will be delayed if you intend to apply for a Committee Letter.
- 1 Gap Year – Juniors
- 2 Gap Years – Seniors
If you miss the deadline to open your Pre-Health file, you will not be eligible to receive a Committee Letter. However, you may still apply to receive a Letter Packet.
Please review the Freshman and Transfer student pages for the criteria to open your file. To schedule an appointment with Susan Parker you may do so here.
To keep your Pre-Health File in good standing, you must do the following:
- Request at least one course evaluation or letter of recommendation per semester. Failure to do so will result in your file becoming inactive and you will need to reapply to the program.
- Attend 3 Pre-Health seminars per semester (or 6 events within the academic year: September-May), as stated in your Pre-Health contract.
- Meet with a Pre-Health Advisor at least once per semester.
Pre-Health files remain open for up to 3 years after graduating from Hunter College. If you are a Hunter Alum, we encourage you to add letters of recommendation to keep you Pre-Health file active after graduation.
To find out which evaluations and recommendations are currently in your pre-health file, please fill out the File Check Request form.
How to Keep Your Pre-Health File Active
As a Pre-Health Transfer Student, what do I need to do to maintain my file after I submit my Pre-Health Application?
- SUBMIT INSTRUCTOR EVALUATIONS:
- Obtaining these evaluations from your instructors serves to build your Pre-Health portfolio and are used when writing your Committee Letter. These evaluations can be obtained from lab instructors, recitation instructors, and non-science course instructors, as well as from your science and math professors.
- You must have a minimum of 3 evaluations from science courses. You can find the Evaluation Request here.
- You should aim to submit 2 Instructor Evaluations each semester so that by the time you apply for a Committee Letter, you will have between 8 and 10 Instructor Evaluations in your Pre-Health File.
- COMPLETE THE ADDITIONAL MANDATORY WORKSHOPS AND GPA REQs
- Open your Pre-Health File. Once your Pre-Health File is officially open, you must:
- Meet with a Pre-Health Advisor at least once per semester.
- Attend at least 3 events sponsored by the Pre-Health Advising Office or 6 events within the academic year.
- Open your Pre-Health File. Once your Pre-Health File is officially open, you must:
How to Submit the Pre-Health File Checklist
Prior to booking a Pre-Health File Review Meeting, students must submit the Pre-Health File Checklist. Please follow the steps below to fill out and submit the Checklist.
Fig. 1 Vital Info
The screenshot above shows basic vital information that must be filled in on the completed checklist, including the year you entered Hunter College, your Pre-Health Application ID Number, your name (please enter this as it appears in your student records), and several other pieces of basic information. You also must upload a copy of your most recent unofficial transcript.
Make sure to fill in all asterisked items or you will be unable to submit the form.
Fig. 2 PPAP 1000 seminar selections
The screenshot above shows a checkbox allowing you to specify that you attended none of the seminars in the series, followed by a checkbox list of the required PPAP 1000 seminars.
If you attended none of the seminars, check that box. Otherwise, check any of the boxes for the seminars you attended.
PLEASE NOTE: For all Pre-Health Applicants applying since the Fall 2020 semester, there are no longer any exemptions granted for attendance at required seminars; nor are there any provisional openings of Pre-Health Files. No Pre-Health File Review Meeting will be granted until the applicant has completed the PPAP 1002 seminar series.
Fig. 3 PPAP 1002 seminar selections
The screenshot above shows a checkbox allowing you to specify that you attended none of the seminars in the series, followed by a checkbox list of the required PPAP 1002 seminars.
If you attended none of the seminars, check that box. Otherwise, check any of the boxes for the seminars you attended.
PLEASE NOTE: Transfer Students are not required to complete the PPAP 1002 seminar series, as is also the case for students who matriculated to Hunter College prior to the Fall 2020 semester.
In Step 4, you specify which seminars you have attended and the exact dates you attended them, by selecting the seminar from the dropdown box shown below in Fig. 4.
Precision is important as an incorrect date will end up delaying your Pre-Health File Review Meeting.
Fig. 4 Dropdown Seminar Selection Box and Calendar
From the above dropdown box, select the seminar you attended, as shown in Fig. 5 below.
Fig. 5 Selecting seminar name
Fig. 5 shows the selection of a seminar. Hidden in the above view is the calendar in which you would enter the precise date you attended the selected seminar.
Important: You must account for all seminars regardless of whether you attended it or not, or you will be unable to submit the form.
If you have not attended a given seminar, select “I did not attend any of the required PPAP 1000 seminars” shown above in Fig. 5, then enter a generic date, as shown in Fig. 6 below.
Fig. 6 Entering a generic date
Once you have repeated this step for all PPAP 1000 seminars, you will need to go through the same process for the PPAP 1002 seminar entries (again, regardless of whether you attended the seminar or not).
Once you have accounted for all seminars in the PPAP 1000 and PPAP 1002 seminar series, in Step 5, you will enter the date of your Pre-Health File Review Meeting, electronically sign your name in the box provided, and click the Continue button, which will submit your Pre-Health Checklist, as shown in Fig. 7 below.
