Summer Session 2025

LSAT Summer Initiative with Carolyn Nelson

Seats will be filled on an as available basis from eligible applicants. Students who complete the spring basic skills introduction have priority. A limited number of open seats are expected. This program is open only to Hunter degree-seeking, matriculated students (seeking their first B.A.) AND Hunter alumni. Individuals must be registered with the Pre-Law Program. 

  • The class meets on Tues/Thurs evenings on campus from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm 
  • Diagnostics are completed independently under test conditions 

Summer Application & Personal Statement Workshop for FALL APPLICANTS for the CURRENT cycle. This two-part workshop series targets students applying to law school during the 2024-2025 cycle for entry into law school in fall 2025. The workshops repeat in subsequent sessions and are offered on various dates and times on a monthly basis - get an early start! You only need to attend the sessions one time. Please attend Parts I & II before scheduling your individual appointments to meet with the Pre-Law Advising Office one-on-one to help you develop and review your materials (we can meet throughout the summer and fall to discuss your work) in connection with your applications. 

  • Mon: Part I: PROCESS OVERVIEW: Planning your strategy and knowing your priorities. A step-by-step review of how to move through the process. Understand the timing and target dates, the importance and role of individual components of the application, law school selection (VERY IMPORTANT!), funding considerations, understanding the admissions audience, and other strategies for success. 
  • Wed: Part II: NUTS & BOLTS: Deep Dive on Written Components. We will discuss in further depth the process of crafting and putting together the materials: personal statement, resume, statement of perspective, addendum, supplemental essays and more. Specific issues and details will be highlighted with samples.
  • Dates/Times: Sessions will be at 6:45 PM - 8:15 PM. 
    • May: Part I Wed 28, Part II Thurs 29
    • June: Part I Wed 25, Part II Mon 30
    • July: Part I Mon 21, Part II Wed 23
    • Aug: Part I Mon 18, Part II Wed 20

JD EDGE: Summer Hunter/AccessLex Introduction to the Law School Process. Hunter is the ONLY undergraduate pilot for this program! JD Edge is a hybrid synchronous and asynchronous program designed by AccessLex to give students an understanding of the process and organization of law school. This is a self-paced program, that also includes several live sessions. The materials taken together equal about 20 hours of programming.  

Be sure to register on the Access Lex website for AskEdna, indicating that you are a Pre-Law Student associated with Hunter College. That is where materials will be shared. 

  • Module 1: Introduction to Law School — Overview of the general structure of legal education, time management, resources for support in the law school community, structure and process of the judicial system, basic legal terminology.  
  • Module 2: Preparing for Class — Approaches to anticipating class engagement and post-class strategies for integrating information. Lessons include case reading and briefing, the Socratic method, notetaking, rule synthesis, creating outlines, and using study materials. 
  • Module 3: Preparing for Exams — Understand the nature of law school exams, good writing strategies, effective study and memorization techniques, and the importance of taking practice exams. Students will prepare for and take a practice exam.
  • Module 4: Preparing for Law Practice — Lessons on licensure, character and fitness, stress management, professional expectations, landing the first legal job, and preparing for and funding the bar exam.
  • Module 5: Moving Forward — Skills required overall well-being in law school such as mindset, professional planning, and reflection.

August 2025

  • August 18 & 20 (6:45 p.m. - 8:15 p.m. each night) Application Workshop Part I and II. Please see notes above under summer programming for 
  • August 19, Wednesday (12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.) LSAC Account Walk-Through — An overview through the eye of a law school candidate. An LSAC Ambassador will discuss how to set up an LSAC account and provide students with a comprehensive presentation of all the ways in which the account is used for a number of purposes. Recommended for 2025 and 2026 applicants. 
  • August 22, Friday (3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.) Pre-Law Orientation: Introduction for all new Pre-Law students, at all levels. Hear about the many opportunities that the Hunter Pre-Law Program offers to students and meet the Pre-Law Advisor. Understand the path to law school, and become familiar with planning resources and strategies.  
  • August 27, Wednesday (12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.) Recruiting Session: Community Justice Connect (formerly Legal Hand). Staffers will describe the work of Community Justice Connect, explain the roles of volunteers, and take questions about the recruitment process for fall roles in the Bronx and Brooklyn offices.   

September 2025

Application & Personal Statement Workshop for FALL APPLICANTS for the CURRENT cycle. If possible, please attend the workshops before scheduling your individual appointments to meet with the Pre-Law Advising Office one-on-one to help you develop and review your materials (we can meet several times) in connection with your applications. The two- part workshop repeats - you only need to attend the cycle one time. 

  • Part I Comprehensive Overview: Understand the timing of the cycle and target dates, individual components of the application, law school selection, and other strategies for success. Sample personal statements will be discussed. Please note that these statements are not models, but a lens to reflect on what makes for a strong essay, and what does not. 
  • Part II Techniques Deep Dive: We will discuss in more depth the process of putting together the materials: the personal statement, resume, diversity statement, addendum, supplemental essays and more. Specific issues and details will be highlighted with samples. 
  • Dates/Times: All sessions take place on Zoom in the evenings (7:00 - 8:30 p.m.), on the days noted below. 
    • September 24 & 26: Part I Wed 24, Part II Fri 26 
    • October 27 & 30: Part I Mon 27, Part II Thurs 30

  • September 2, Tuesday (2:30 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.) Monthly Pre-Law Program Meeting - Debunking Myths about the Pre-Law Path. You’ve heard a lot of things about the pre-law track… we will bring the facts into focus.  
  • September 4, Thursday (6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.) MAKE UP SESSION: Pre-Law Orientation: Introduction for all new Pre-Law students, at all levels. Did you miss our orientation session? Come hear about the many opportunities that the Hunter Pre-Law Program offers to students and meet the Pre-Law Advisor.   • September 9, Tuesday (3:15 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.) A Discussion with Fragomen at the Firm: Careers in Immigration Law. Hunter alumni attorneys at boutique business immigration firm Fragomen will discuss their work (both for business clients and pro bono) and their career paths.  

Meet at 3:00 p.m. at Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen & Loewy, 1400 Broadway, New York, NY 10018. The group will gather in the lobby before heading upstairs together. Office attire please.

  • September 10, Wednesday (12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.) LSAC Credentials Assembly Service Overview. An LSAC Ambassador will discuss the Credentials Assembly Service in depth, describe its functions, and explain the mechanisms for applying to law school through your LSAC account. Recommended for 2025 and 2026 applicants. 
  • September 18, Wednesday (6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.) Panel of Law School Officers: Dos and Don'ts of the Application Process: Columbia, Cornell, Fordham & Cardozo. Law school admissions officers visit Hunter virtually to meet you, and to explain what you need to know to write a great application. Hear first-hand what the law schools are looking for, and have the chance to network with law school representatives from New York. This panel is especially useful for alumni and Seniors applying for the 2025-26 cycle, or those planning to apply next year (Juniors, that means you!).  
  • September 24, Wednesday & September 26, Friday (7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. each evening) Application & Personal Statement Workshop for FALL APPLICANTS for the CURRENT cycle (description above). Part I Wed 24, Part II Friday 25. 
  • September 26, Friday & September 27, Saturday (9 a.m. - 5 p.m. other days; ok to attend select sessions/times) EXCLUSIVE FOR HUNTER - International Access to Justice Forum 2025 sponsored by NYU & Fordham Law Schools. The 2025 International Access to Justice Forum is hosting 35+ panels of scholars, researchers, jurists, practitioners, reformers, court and dispute resolution experts from across the globe, to discuss exciting new research, theory, and policy developments in the global movement for civil justice. Panels cover a broad range of work advancing access to justice through community empowerment and engagement, court reform, diversion programs, law schools, tech and AI, and through human rights and democracy efforts.  

October 2025

  • October 7, Tuesday (2:30 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.) Monthly Pre-Law Program Meeting: What Can I Do With a Law Degree? Discussion of different roles and contexts for lawyering, in addition to substantive practice areas. Understand the organization of the profession. We will follow up with panels on the work of lawyers in three different sectors in the coming weeks, with additional insight on how the lines between them may be blurred: Government, Private Sector, Non-Profit 
  • October 15, Wednesday (12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.) How to Network at the LSAC Forum. Lindsay Gladney, Vice Dean for Admissions, University at Buffalo School of Law (SUNY), will discuss how to make a good impression on law school representatives at the LSAC forum, and how to effectively elicit the information that will be the most helpful to you. Ms. Gladney will also share information about opportunities and programming at Buffalo Law. Questions to ask at a law school fair.  
  • October 16, Thursday (6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.) National Consortium of Public Interest Law Schools (NCPILS) Reception hosted by CUNY Law. This event will bring together admissions representatives from law schools across the country—each with a strong commitment to training lawyers dedicated to public interest. Participating schools include: CUNY Law, Berkeley, UC Irvine, Northeastern, University of Louisville, Vermont, Lewis & Clark, Roger Williams, UDC, and more. Location: 2 Court Square, Long Island City, NY 11101-4356. 
  • October 17, Friday (12:15 p.m. - 1:15 p.m.) Info Session: Fordham Law School IDEAL Scholars Program. Through the IDEAL & REAL Scholars Programs, Fordham Law School makes a serious and ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the legal profession. IDEAL Program highlights also include: law school application prep; summer internships; mentoring, DEI training, opportunities to participate in Fordham Law School sponsored events, and travel. RECOMMENDED FOR FRESHMEN & SOPHOMORES!  
  • October 17, Friday and October 18, Saturday (Timed entry) NYC LSAC FORUM.  Networking will be most useful to those who are currently applying to law school, and those who are applying in the coming year. The forum can also be useful for other upper classmen, particularly the workshops on the application process, LSAT, and paying for law school. The LSAC resource center at the forum has additional written materials on these topics, and also information on diversity opportunities. Location: New York Hilton Midtown, 1335 6th Ave, New York, NY 10019. The event is free but you must register at the link above.
  • October 19, Sunday (9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.) LatinoJustice PRLDEF’s Law Day Fair. This annual event is held each year the day after the LSAC forum to connect pre-law students from a variety of backgrounds and life experiences with dozens of law schools from across the country. This day-long event is a diversity oriented, more intimate program than the generalized LSAC forum, and will include local schools. Location: Fordham University School of Law – 150 W 62nd St., New York, NY 10023. Registration is required; there is a modest fee.  
  • October 20, Monday (7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.) Building your School List & Spreadsheeting the Application Process – CURRENT APPLICANTS ONLY. We will discuss in deeper detail how to compile your law school list. We will also consider ways to stay organized through the application cycle. 
  • October 22, Wednesday (12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.) Small Claims Court Action Center training, with Kyle Gillers, Esq. Training to assist individuals preparing for small claims court. Understand the court process and routines.  
  • October 23, Thursday (10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) EXCLUSIVE FOR HUNTER - New York Law School: Court-Appointed Neutrals Ethics Symposium (ok to attend for part of day). Program dedicated to exploring the ethics rules governing court-appointed neutrals (“special masters,” “referees”). This symposium will feature expert speakers and panelists who will summarize progress to date and invite proposals for advancing this area of legal ethics.   • October 23, Thursday (6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.) Harvard Law Visit with Courtney McMann, Associate Director of Admissions.
  • October 23, Thursday (5:45 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.) St. John’s Undergraduate Moot Court Scrimmage. Hosted by St. John’s University School of Law, 8000 Utopia Parkway.

  • October 28, Tuesday (2:30 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.) Panel on Trained Volunteer Advocacy Roles - REQUIRED for Freshmen and New Transfers and New Joiners for Good Standing in the Program. Hear about how you can have an impact on the community – while building your skills and your resume. Legal Hand, Catholic Charities (immigration), Metcouncil (housing), NYPIRG Small Claims Court Project, and the Medicare Rights Center will discuss the roles of volunteers in their organization, and the many issues that you can learn about by being involved.  
  • October 29, Wednesday (6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.) Panel on Public Interest Legal Careers. Explores how lawyers serve the public good by aiding underserved individuals and communities. Panelists sharing experiences in litigation, policy, and advocacy. The panel will highlight lawyers who focus on justice, social change, and access to legal help for those who cannot afford it, and also feature diverse practice areas and employer types.

November 2025

  • November 4, Tuesday (2:30 p.m. - 3:45 p.m.) REQUIRED FOR ALL On the Docket: Judge Edit Shkreli. Judge Shkreli was elected in November 2023 and has been serving on the New York City Civil Court bench since January 2024. Prior to her election to the bench, she was an attorney with more than 12 years of legal experience, duly admitted to practice law in the State of New York and in the Republic of Albania. Judge Shkreli was born and raised in Albania until she and her family immigrated to New York. She is the first Albanian-American judge to be elected in the City of New York, and the first female Albanian-American judge in the United States. Judge Shkreli is a 2006 graduate of Hunter College and a 2011 cum laude graduate of New York Law School.  
  • November 5, Wednesday (12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.) Panel of Law School Officers: Mock Application Review. Learn how law school admissions decisions are made! Law school admissions committee members from Arizona State, Seton Hall, Fordham, UC Irvine, & Texas A&M will walk through sample applications and their various components – including transcripts, LSAT scores, personal statements, and letters of recommendation – and debate the strengths and weaknesses of each applicant, demonstrating how institutions weigh numbers (GPA/LSAT) against soft factors like leadership and unique backgrounds. This session provides an informative, first-hand look at the law school admissions process and how it works.  
  • November 19, Wednesday (7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.) Attorney Panel on Working before Law School. A panel of Hunter alumni attorneys will provide aspiring law students with perspective on the benefits of taking a period to gain work experience and skills, and how to leverage that experience in law school application. Panelists will also discuss their transition to law school, and how their prior experience has benefited their legal job search.

January 2026

  • Winter Intersession: Moot Court Class. Moot Court is a challenging one credit Intersession course that simulates the appellate court setting. Students become knowledgeable about existing legal controversies, prepare legal arguments, and present a case before a mock judicial panel. By learning to read cases and make oral arguments, students gain insight into court-based decision making, as well as the role of lawyers and judges within the process.  
    • When: The class will meet for 6 evening sessions in January. Final arguments (for which you must be present) will be held thereafter on two different evenings with Hunter alumni attorneys. 
    • Who: Registration for the course is by permission only from the Pre-Law Advising Office. Participation is capped at 12 students, and is competitive. Your chosen major is not important. What is important is that you are eager to study the art of argument.
