Summary

Develop context-based teaching skills in Costa Rica this summer!

In recognition of English as an International language and the burgeoning of English teaching worldwide, there has been a significant demand for a course which will prepare TESOL educators to teach successfully in the growth areas of Asia and Latin America. In this course, students will gain an overview of the contexts of English language teaching internationally and of the issues relating to English as an International language. Context-based teaching methods and curricula and issues of culture in language will also be addressed. Students will explore key aspects of teaching English as an International language such as the role of world Englishes, the concepts of “native” and “standard” English, and the way that local contexts must shape a principled approach to English teaching internationally.

Location: San José, Costa Rica

Term: Summer 2026

Credits Offered: EDESL 702 (2 credits)

Scholarships: In addition to the Gilman Scholarship, students should visit our Scholarships Page for more opportunities. Students interested in applying for the Gilman scholarship should email Stephen Lassonde at ops@hunter.cuny.edu.
