Campus Hazing Transparency Report

Hazing is a serious offense and is not tolerated by Hunter College. Any individual or student group found to be involved in hazing might be subject to organization suspension, disciplinary action, and/or criminal prosecution. The statement of CUNY Policy can be found here. Additionally, the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report can be found at this link.

New York State Law (N.Y. Penal Law §120.16: Hazing in the First Degree) defines Hazing as follows:

“A person is guilty of hazing in the first degree when, in the course of another person's initiation into or affiliation with any organization, he intentionally or recklessly engages in conduct, including, but not limited to, making physical contact with or requiring physical activity of such other person, which creates a substantial risk of physical injury to such other person or a third person and thereby causes such injury. Hazing in the first degree is a class A misdemeanor.”

StopHazing provides more information on hazing:

Hazing is any activity expected of someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers them, regardless of a person’s willingness to participate.

There are three components that define hazing:

  1. It occurs in a group context
  2. Humiliating, degrading, or endangering behavior
  3. Happens regardless of an individual’s willingness to participate
