Duties: As armed NY State Peace Officers, DMV Investigative Specialists (IS1) conduct a variety of field investigations
and basic law enforcement functions such as arrests, testimony, and prisoner transport. They conduct

investigations of forged ownership and identity documents and suspected fraud or deceit by registrants,
licensees, or applicants. IS1’s use facial recognition technology to uncover multiple identities and identity theft
schemes. They investigate those engaged in stealing vehicles, including organized auto theft rings; determine
the true identity of vehicles and locating VINs to detect stolen vehicles and parts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Investigative Specialist Traineeship (2-year)
    • Either: 1. four years of investigative experience; **
      Or 2. an associate degree and two years of investigative experience; **
      Or 3. a bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Investigative Specialist 1 (1 yr. probation):
    • Either: 1. six years of qualifying experience;**
      Or 2. an associate degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, police science, criminal
      justice administration, criminology, criminal investigation, police studies, public justice,
      forensic accounting, forensic psychology, forensic science, economic crime management,
      or homeland security AND four years of qualifying experience;**
    • Or 3. a bachelor’s or higher degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, police science,
      criminal justice administration, criminology, criminal investigation, police studies, public
      justice, forensic accounting, forensic psychology, forensic science, economic crime
      managment, or homeland security AND two years of qualifying experience;**
    • ** Gathering and securing information and evidence, and preparation of detailed reports on
      the method of gathering the evidence and the results of the investigations.
