Diversity and Inclusion Internship and

General Dispute Resolution Law Internship

Summer 2023


The New York State Unified Court System’s Office of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)
Programs is currently recruiting a total of three (3) unpaid interns:
  • one (1) intern to assist ADR Office staff with research and related endeavors to promote
    Diversity and Inclusion in court-connected ADR; and

  • two (2) interns to assist ADR Office staff with legal research and related tasks pertaining
    to ADR.

These unpaid internships are intended to be virtual. There may be opportunities for in-person
court or ADR observations as the needs of the Unified Court System may allow. Applicants for
both internships must have their own computer, email (school-based [.edu] emails are preferred)
and any other reasonably foreseeable hardware and software to operate in a virtual
environment. (Accepted applicants will not be expected to print hard copy material for purposes
of either internship.) The New York State Unified Court System (UCS) utilizes the Microsoft-based
platform of Teams. Applicants must have or be able to download Teams to their own computer.

. Law student applicants who anticipate serving under the auspices of their law school should
ensure that they retain access to Lexis and Westlaw throughout the summer.

Internships and Responsibilities:

Diversity and Inclusion Internship

The selected intern will work with a team of ADR Office staff to gather and compile articles,
research and data on ADR diversity, equity, inclusion and bias, among other related
responsibilities, under the supervision of one primary staff member. Applicants for this
internship need not be a law student; however, such applicants must demonstrate comparable
education and/or professional experience relative to dispute resolution and/or diversity and
inclusion.

General Dispute Resolution Law Internship

The selected interns will work with a team of ADR Office staff to help perform legal research and
related tasks within the scope of Dispute Resolution Law, including but not limited to
comparative law of various jurisdictions, as well as other tasks to assist staff in the promotion of
court-connected ADR. Applicants must have completed at least one (1) full year of law school
prior to commencement of this summer internship. “Rising third-year law applicants (i.e.,
completion of two full years of law school), applicants with Law Review/Journal experience and
LLM candidates are preferred.
 

 
Criteria and Skills:
  • The interested applicants must submit a typed resume and cover letter;
  • The selected interns must commit to working approximately 15-20 hours per week or 100
    hours in total for the summer;
  • Applicants for all internships should have a strong interest in ADR, the value of diversity and
    inclusion and social justice; and

  • The applicants must have strong research and organizational skills, effective written
    communication skills, basic knowledge of Excel and Word, and the ability to send emails.

PLEASE NOTE: This is an unpaid internship program. The Office of Alternative Dispute
Resolution (ADR) Programs will undertake reasonable efforts to certify/complete reasonable
documentation for students arranging to receive college/law school credit for the internship.
Within five (5) business days of the ADR Office notifying an applicant of acceptance to the
internship, an accepted intern who requires college or law school credit must notify the above-
named ADR Office staff member by email of any and all documents that the school shall require
to be completed or certified by the ADR Office at any point before, during or after the
internship.
