Student Veteran Services (SVS)

As veteran students, you have opportunities available to you every semester to make the transition easier. Whether you are looking to receive advisement before your priority registration date, become re/certified, or file a tuition deferral, our advisors in Student Veteran Services do these and more.

Advisors are available to assist you and guide you throughout the college process. They understand that balancing college life with military, career, family, and personal responsibilities can be extremely challenging. That's why Student Veteran Services is proud to provide support and information to meet your needs and get you to the graduation finish line. Our staff comes from a variety of backgrounds and experiences and will work with you in order to accomplish your goals.

Student Veteran Services (SVS) team

For almost 30 years, I've worked with college students in many capacities. As Associate Director for Academic Advising I lead the Student Veteran Services (SVS) team at Hunter College. I provide academic advising support and serve as the lead certifying official with the Veterans Administration (VA).

My academic advising practice teaches student veterans how to streamline their transition to Hunter, and how to make academic progress while maximizing their education benefits each semester. I serve as a point of contact for referrals to the college’s veteran-centric institutional and personal support programs. Whether we have a one-on-one meeting, a remote advising session, or a combination of the two, I work with my veteran advisees throughout their time at Hunter, with the goal of getting them to the graduation finish line.

PROVE (Project for Return and Opportunity in Veterans' Education) serves student veterans on 7 CUNY campuses, including Hunter College. Our staff supports student veterans and provides resources to help them transition from military to college life. I joined PROVE in 2008 and have been working with Hunter College student veterans ever since. I also serve as the Faculty Advisor for the Hunter College Student Veteran’s Club.

I received my master’s degree in Social Work in 1990 from Hunter College School of Social Work (now Silberman). I have been teaching since 1999 and am an adjunct professor at Silberman as well as Columbia University School of Social Work. I developed the curriculum and am now teaching the “Social Work with Veterans and Service members” course at Silberman. Working with veterans has become a true passion for me. I plan to continue working with PROVE, while also training up the next generation of social workers who will work with the military.
