Dr. Kenya Beard named Nurse Educator of 2013 by National Black Nurses Association

The National Black Nurses Association has named Kenya Beard of the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing as Nurse Educator of The Year.  Beard, EdD, GNP-BC, NP-C, ACNP-BC, CNE, is an Assistant Professor and the Josiah Macy Faculty Scholar at Hunter-Bellevue. The award recognizes "Outstanding contributions to professional and/or patient education."

 When news of the award was received, Hunter President Jennifer J. Raab said, "We are so proud of Kenya for having been given this well-deserved recognition."  Dean of the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing, Gail C. McCain added, "Kenya is just one of the best teachers ever, and a rising star!"

Dr. Beard, who received her undergraduate degree from Phillips Beth Israel School of Nursing in 1986 and her doctorate from Dowling College in 2009, has been the recipient of multiple awards, including the Josiah Macy Faculty Scholar Award, the 24^th Annual Black Nurses Day 2012 Honoree for Outstanding Service to the Nursing Profession and the Community at Large, and was nominated for the Hunter College Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence in 2013, as well as the Maggie E. Jacobs Service Award of the Manhattan Chapter of the Black Nurses Association.

Dr. Beard is a prolific writer, has presented in webinars, contributed to textbooks, and has been published in peer and non-peer reviewed publications on subjects ranging from healthcare to pedagogy. When she was informed of the award she said, "It is truly an honor to have my contributions to nursing recognized by such a prestigious organization but ... I feel like I'm accepting this award on behalf of all the nurses whose efforts continue to advance the science of nursing education."
