Hunter Congratulates Harold Holzer, Winner of the 2016 Goldsmith Book Prize

Harold Holzer, the Jonathan F. Fanton Director of the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute

Harold Holzer, the Jonathan F. Fanton Director of the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College, is the recipient of the 2016 Goldsmith Book Prize. The prize is awarded annually by the Shorenstein Center of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

The prize honors Holzer for his book Lincoln and the Power of the Press: The War for Public Opinion (Simon & Schuster, 2014). In the words of the Shorenstein Center, this exceptional work “best fulfills the objective of improving democratic governance through an examination of the intersection between the media, politics and public policy.” The New York Times described the book as “full of fresh information and superb analysis,” and “destined to be recognized as a classic.”

Holzer is one of the country’s leading authorities on Abraham Lincoln and the political culture of the Civil War era. At Roosevelt House on March 22, he will discuss his latest book, A Just and Generous Nation: Abraham Lincoln and the Fight for American Opportunity (Basic Books, 2016), along with co-author Norton Garfinkle.
