State Department Awards Critical Language Scholarships to Four Hunter Students
Hunter students Patrick Harned, Matthew Marcus, Javier Pacayo and Yelena Suponya have been awarded 2015 Critical Language Scholarships from the U.S. Department of State. With this highly selective scholarship, each recipient will spend the summer abroad studying a “critical needs” language.
The CLS program is part of a government effort to increase the number of Americans mastering critical foreign languages. Scholarship recipients are provided with fully funded, group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences. This summer, America’s Critical Language Scholars will study at intensive language institutes in 13 countries.
Hunter’s Critical Language Scholars are headed to the Middle East and Asia. Patrick Harned will study Arabic in Madaba, Jordan; Matthew Marcus will study Urdu in Lucknow, India; Javier Picayo will study Indonesian in Malang, Indonesia; and Yelena Suponya will study Chinese in Beijing.
