(New York, NY) – April 19, 2004 – Hunter College’s School of Social Work has been ranked 14th in U.S. News & World Report’s recently published list of best graduate schools of social work.  This is another indicator that the School of Social Work continues to improve in its national ranking by moving from 17th in last year’s list to 14th this year.

“Hunter continues to uphold its reputation as one of the pre-eminent social work schools in the country and we are delighted to be included in U.S. News & World Report’s survey in the company of such other fine institutions,” said James A. Blackburn, dean of the Hunter College School of Social Work.

According to U.S. News & World Report, the rankings are based solely on the results of peer assessment surveys sent to deans, other administrators, and/or faculty at accredited degree programs or schools.  Respondents rated the academic quality of programs on a 5-point scale, based on their assessment of the curriculum, faculty and graduates.

Founded in 1958, the Hunter College School of Social Work is the only public graduate school of social work in New York City and one of the most selective programs in the United States.  The school prepares students for responsible and creative practice in all fields of social work.  It has a strong commitment to educating social workers to serve a diverse population in an urban environment, and recognizes a special responsibility toward serving the urban community in agency settings.  Fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, the school is a model for social work schools nationwide and is committed to maintaining its pioneering role in urban social work education.
